The back porch and the great pumpkin.

When dad built the house in 62-63, he built a small wood porch on the back, shown in this 1975 picture. Notice the hand dressed log used as a step. That probably came from the remnants of the old house I’ve discussed earlier. Also a sheet of plywood layer on the ground to the sidewalk.

That’s our beagle dog snoopy.

We also hand mixed and poured the sidewalks ourselves.

In 1976 we removed the wooden porch and on 18 sept 1976 poured a concrete slab for the covered porch. I don’t have pics of the build, but remember helping dad build it.
Found notes, got boards on roof 2 oct and started shingles.
This pic of me is may 1977 on the new porch.

There’s one step from sidewalk to the porch, and another step up to the back door.

Something weird happened, a pumpkin vine started growing next to the porch.

And it kept growing and growing and growing. By fall we had to walk way out around it.

We were afraid it would reach the cars, but it didn’t.

But it did get the cat. I think we counted over 100 pumpkins on the vine.

This picture was celebrating my grandmothers 75th birthday. On the right is her brother Archie, her daughter and my aunt Polly, my grandmother in the center left of the door, and then her sister Sadie. My sister is on far left of picture. This pic shows them all with my mom also. My grandmother passed away 2 yrs after this. They have all passed away now, mom being the last.

Great pics and stories.

What were you holding in your lap sitting on the porch?

Just found we poured the back porch concrete 19760918

We also painted the cabin roof that day.

I kept a diary from 1975-1979. I need go back thru and label some of my pics from that time.

2 months after you poured the porch, I left NZ and immigrated to Australia and grew old....... I have had a good life compared to some.

My niece was recently declared cancer free, for the 2nd time. Hope it stays away this time.

the recent thread about rebuilding a pond made me think about our farm pond. My dad had this pond built not too long after buying the farm. Here's a picture taken thru the trees a few weeks ago, and a couple taken before I was born. My grandfather is in the homemade boat, he died when I was 3 so I really never knew him. The other picture is my parents and grandmother, and 3 of my sisters, the oldest passed away a couple yrs ago. My dad is holding the fishing pole in the background. We built a dock in the pond, and used to fish it occasionally. My best memories was ice skating on the pond in the winter, used to play hockey with homemade hockey sticks. We had some skating parties, and would build a big bonfire on the bank to keep warm.
Looks like your pond could use some TLC.
hugs, Brandi
