I Need a Bigger Tractor

Spend $60K to save 20 hours a year mowing!

Hey, we all have our toys and our pasttimes! Who said this was to pay for itself? ... but that is a sobering perspective.

The older you get, the less important paying for itself,( or making economic sense ) becomes!

Sounds like in this case a once a year occurrence and don't like mowing it'd be easier to pay the hay person to take marginal hay off or just have them mow down.

I know my tractor is unlikely to pay for itself with my use, but if it saves me one back surgery it's worth it. Sure, driveway maintenance and brush hogging it myself helps pay for the tractor, but the grapple let's me manage the property that would otherwise be very difficult to manage and would be a physical hardship and/or back-breaking endeavor.

Even if I _can_ do it without the tractor, I _shouldn't_. Tractor for the win!

I purchased 93 acres in Crossville, TN two years ago to be used as future site of my retirement home/current getaway/deer camp. I purchased a Kubota M7060HD12 to help manage the land. My mistake was going with a 6' cutter. I didn't want to go expensive as the land is rough in spots and I knew the cutter would take a beating until I learned where the rough spots and rocks were. I can tell you that I'm having to cut 65 acres of it myself. I have tried to get someone take the hay for free if they will maintain the fields. The hay this summer was really thick and I had to bush hog it. I've been though this situation three times now where I've been told they wanted the hay but would never follow-up. I'm learning that if you want something done, you can only count on yourself. Like others have said, look at cutter needs first and then look at the tractor. I wished I spent the money on a batwing as working on the weekends only limits my time.

Why does it have to be cut?

I have lots of land that I never cut and it does just fine, just like it did before I came along.

Sawyer Bob ? You gotta be kidding. Unless you plan to plant trees and make a tree farm out of it you best cut it at least annually. How long have you been on a farm? (I'm not being sarcastic, really just asking...) In many states in the East (and probably Tenn) the autumn olives will take the place and in 2 years be so large you need a monster bush hog to cut them. In 3 or 4 years that will no longer work. If it is just thin brush, no thorn bush startups, no autumn olives, no self-seeding ironweeds and other worse woody trash -- then you might get by for a while. In general you best be cutting it. Otherwise you are quietly cultivating what my grandfather called "filth." The only passive solution I know of (which might or might not work depending on the property, your fences, etc. is to run enough cattle or other animals to keep it down. Even then it will need cut once in a while. IMO.

And for the OP, for Pete's sake keep that existing mower doing his thing on the parts where it can be cut for hay! Twice a year is plenty.
