The brickyard had a 4 foot splitter with a wide wedge. When a stubborn piece released on that, you did not want to be standing in the way!

Anothe reason why I prefer knots towards the stop plate, dont I hate that sudden bang!!! When I see things start going we all stand back just in case, it only takes one hit in the gut to learn.......

NICE picture! I always wished I could fix his up for a Christmas gift or something. He bought it around 1960 and did a lot of work with it over the years, even taking it to Boston when he needed pots for the greenhouse back when they were made of clay. He sold it for $500 and the last time that I knew it was sitting out in a gravel pit, rusting away.

I caught a slab from a 4 foot stick in the shins. Luckily I was young and dumb so didn't know that it hurt. ;)

I stand back far enough so I don't get hit in the body, but I usually have my hand on or near the side of the log, so when they pop, I get hit in the palm. I usually find maple to be the pieces that pop, it's the straight clean grain & the tight knots I guess.

There must be a ware bar behind the zerk. I'd have to be careful putting a zerk on my wedge cause the wedge is going through the wood. Yes there is more resistance that way, it's worse on frozen wood, a little pressure and bang the wood sometimes flies apart where as thin wedge is more likely to slide threw........

If you can zoom in, on the push block, you can see the zerk between the sticker and one of the bolts that hold the sides together.

My splitter has a grease zerk on each side of the push block. I also have a taller thin wedge, it doesn't push the split open as far as the more wedge shaped splitters, but it is a little less resistance through some of the big pieces.

Is that a Timberwolf TW-1 splitter? They used to be made just down the road from me, before they got bought out and moved. I've used a few over the years, They are seriously good splitters. I have not kept track of them since the operation moved to Marathon, NY. IT appears they've made changes to at least some models.

Yes it's a TW-1, I bought it used (practically unheard of) from a dealer. The guy who owned it passed, and his widow felt she needed a lawnmower more than a splitter, so she traded it in. He barely wore any paint off it, so it looked almost brand new, had to drive up near Syracuse to get it, about a 7 hour round trip, but well worth it. I also stopped paying attention to the company once they switched hands, the local dealer stopped carrying them, so finding parts is an issue. I need to change the filter, its been a few years.

That is the same splitter I have. I made some modifications to mine. I was disappointed when I heard the company sold the brand.

Do you know where to get the filter. I should get a few also.

Did you get the 4-way wedge? It is a real timesaver.

I was disappointed also, I feared that they would change the design and lose dealers. There was a dealer not far from me, but the stopped carrying them when TW changed owners. I do not know where to get the filters, but my neighbor has the same splitter. He buys the filters from somewhere I will check with him if his source is still good, and I'll let you know. In fact running his splitter with him is the reason I bought mine. May not be the most powerful unit out there, but it is well thought out and runs great. He opted for the log lift and table grate. Mine was used and the PO didn't, or the dealer sold them off separately.

I do have the 4 way wedge, it does help a lot, I also built an outfeed table, so the splits go onto that instead of the ground, that helps a lot too.

I see you're from Granby, I used to do some work up in Norfolk, nice section of CT up there.

Timberwolf does have a great design with really good features! Once I used one, I could see that it was superior to any other splitter I had had ever used, so I also bought one,

The 4-way DOES save a lot of time splitting,

My wife loves to run it too...
