Getting "Rid Of" your Aluminum Cans

I have a gas check maker for plain base cast bullets that uses aluminum cans as the material. It is a nice way to use some up for high velocity cast bullets. Most get saved for the $.10/can return.

I live in Kalifornia so everything is taxed or has a fee, aluminum and plastic containers have what is called a C.R.V. fee that you pay when you buy. It used to be you could redeem them in a lot of places but they have been slowly dwindling away. I drink beer in aluminum cans and for years could redeem them at the local trash transfer station but covid shut that down. Couple of days ago I found a scrap place that would take them, most won't, so I loaded up what I had and drove the 15 miles to the scrap yard. They were pretty busy but efficient so it didn't take long. I was surprised when they paid me $1.65 per lb.. That is the most I can ever remember getting for them, it used to be from $1.00 to $1.25 per lb.. Worth the trip.

You get $1.65/lb for aluminum cans?!?!?!?:eek:
I just Googled scrap aluminum prices here and it ranged from 25-30¢/lb.

Somehow beverage container deposits should be based on income. Too many well-off people around here just thow them in the trash. Shouldn't be hard with everyone carrying cell phones. You make 100 grand, you pay 5.00 deposit a can.

Maybe there should be deposits on ALL containers. HEFTY deposits. No big deal, you get it back, if you do the right thing.

We crush our aluminum cans and wash and store the tin cans. I plan on doing a little welding and turn my electric wood splitter in to a can crusher. I figure a 55 gallon barrel will hold several years worth of flattened cans. Haul it all to the dump every few years.

I've given up on recycling cans. So go ahead and let me have it.
We don't have recycling pick up so that means I have to store them until I have a frustrating amount, load them and drive through a tire punching scrap yard for a couple dollars. The money isn't the issue, but the inconvenience, the smell, bugs, and irritation is.
35 years ago the Phoenix valley was loaded with aluminum can machines outside convenience stores that dispensed coins for cans. Do areas still have these? Ours doesn't. I would think that is an awesome idea, but at the mercy of scrap prices.
I read somewhere that the world throws away our entire fleet of aircraft in cans every year, or something to that effect.
Is my area the only one that makes it this difficult? What do you all do?

Portland has many many of those can machines. Portland Oregon. Usually in grocery store parking lots.

Take a minute and watch. You could write a dissertation on the aluminum can culture.

Here's where politics screws it up again. Two big industries in Oregon are wine and bottled water. Coincidentally those are the only 2 beverage container types that do not have deposits. Funny how that works.

The end result is, the street people go thru your garbage and take everything but the wine and water bottles.

Some residents separate them before they put them out, makes for less mess that way.
