Been doing some interior house remodeling, so no firewood lately. Almost all our snow is gone, the rain on Christmas took care of that. Only the larger piles didn't melt all the way. But it sounds like we should get some new snow later today. Happy New Beer to everyone.

So I may have got this from this very thread somewhere above this post but it is worth a repeat with the current beech conversation:

Joke of the Day:

THREE TREES AND A WOODPECKER
Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, "Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?" The birch says he cannot tell, but just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling.

The birch says, "Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"

The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree and replies, "It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch, It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever poked my pecker into."

Can't remember many New Years like this. A calm, sunny 20 degrees - perfect. I've been working along the top of this ledge. Thought a pic looking over the edge would be good. It's 300 feet pretty near straight down to civilization. My closest neighbor as the crow flies is in that round opening this side of the road. The top of the ridge is our boundary line.

When we have a south east gale stuff along here takes a beating. The wind funnels down the valley then accelerates as it gets squeezed pushing up over the ridge. Makes for easy firewood with plenty of room to work because there isn't a lot that stays upright long. This yellow birch went over last week.

Dang Gordon! How do you work on a ridge like that safely when there is snow? One mis-step and you are in for one quick trip down the hill. I would be very nervous up there!

Here is a pic from last week. I pretty much stay on the left side of the road away from the drop off. There is a nice flat shelf wide enough to keep it comfortable.

Its not bad , part of the reason we moved here... I have had 3 inches of rain in the last two days though.. glad it wasn't cold enough for it to be that nasty snow!!

Happy New Year to you as well! How's things in your neck of the woods?

Scott

I can not complain . . . ;)

I like a commercial break from all this beeching about beech....... Nice video hunt I watched it several times, looks wet down there. So how far is the club house from those targets just past you? Do a fly around on the club some time so I can give a honest safety evaluation that you wanted......

You mean last year. This picture clearly shows the winch does get off the ground a little ways, say about 12".

Your tire chains ever bang the fenders? The fender looks close and I dont much slack there, I have to keep my chains loose as goose so they stay straight so a high gear they will slap my fenders....

The first set of targets are at 120 yards, the second set are 300 yards. My miscalculation when building the range, they were supposed to be 100 and 300, might move the close set sometime, and might add a 200 yard set as well.

And what are you wanting me to video on this "fly around" ?
