Can't decide which scut to buy!

I was in your shoes in 2015.

Local Kubota and Mahindra within 30 min from me.
I love my emax but......the Kubota seems to have more accessories and bolt on parts available

I started out looking at subcompact. Deere, New Holland, Kubota, Massey. The more I shopped the more I realized a subcompact would be a waste. It's a small jump in price to go compact and get a real set of tires and twice the weight that'll actually pull a box blade and do some work.

Are you looking for a mid mount mower or rear finishing or rough cut mower?

What kind of trailer?

Kubota makes a gear version one size bigger. For a couple thousand more, you would get a much more capable tractor/loader/backhoe/mower. Lots of SCUts get traded in for bigger tractors.

Wow , lots of very good replies! I guess the reason why I prefer not to step up to a compact is that it might be a bit overkill for my current property. I do have a lot of grading/ backhoe work, but to use a MMM would be a bit tight on a CUT, in my opinion. We are financially preparing to purchase a 5-10 acre parcel in the next few years so id likely use it to do a lot of work prepping the property for a home. There would be no rush for site clearing and such, so I felt like maybe a scut could be fine.

And to be honest, the price is not the biggest factor. I need to be sold on an HST more than anything. The synchromesh emax22 looks solid to me, but one poster said its kind of weird, like an ashtray on a jetski

I would forget about anything but a HST. For ground engaging work, think plowing fields, a stick shift, shuttle shift etc is better because it puts more power to the ground. For most people buying smaller tractors for homeowner use will be happier with a HST.

If you are looking at getting a bigger piece of property I would look hated at a CUT instead of a SCUT. Kind of blurred lines there but bigger tires are nice. I own a JD now but owned a Kubota before that and I personally would stick with those two.

A small frame CUT isn't that much bigger than a SCUT - just bigger in the right places. Look at a 1xxx vs 2xxx series John Deere, or a BX vs B series Kubota. People seldom trade for a smaller tractor.

Subcompact tractors are best regarded as wonderful lawn mowers with the ability to do light landscaping tasks over smooth ground. Grading will take time with a SCUT but a present you are dealing with just one acre. FEL bucket lift capacity is around 500 pounds. Not much by tractor standards BUT SURE BEATS TRUNDLING A WHEELBARROW OF 100 POUNDS CAPACITY.

Purchasing a Subcompact as an intermediate, non-intimidating, "learning" tractor is common.

With 9"or less ground clearance with mower removed, it is difficult to take a SCUT into woodlands or work uneven ground. Because of low ground clearance, HST under the tractor is vulnerable to ground/impact damage. I do not know that a gear transmission SCUT is any less vulnerable.

Long before you purchase additional land you will be eager to trade up from a 1,400 pound bare weight tractor to a 2,700 pound tractor for five to ten tractor workable acres. The fundamental importance of TRACTOR WEIGHT eludes many tractor shoppers. Within subcompact and compact tractor categories, a significant tractor capability increase requires a bare tractor weight increase of 50%. It takes a 100% increase in bare tractor weight to elicit MY-OH-MY!

I don’t think you’ll find a larger tractor overkill and probably find the scut too small.

I'm glad I got what I got, but occasionally I find tasks where I think to myself, "hmmm I can't get the tractor in here... a little scut could do this perfectly"

The good news is, the wife is pretty much in agreement, but there's just not enough scut-only sized jobs to drop that much cash on one.

Yet.
