Apple's Siri, which "lives" in various Apple devices in addition to their cell phone, including an iPad that I keep on a coffee table in front of the TV, often imagines it hears its "Hey Siri" wakeup phrase while the TV is on. The screen on the iPad displays a Siri graphic to indicate Siri is active, and usually that's all that happens. But sometimes, Siri will display what it thinks it heard, then go on to fetch something from the Internet and display that as well. The same iPad runs Apple's Home app, so in theory Siri could also toggle lights, fans, the thermostat on the furnace, or even the sprinkler system. But so far, that hasn't been a problem. I've had similar experiences while talking on the phone, where Siri starts talking out of the iPad speaker while I'm trying to listen to the person on the other end of the phone call. Yes, I'd have to agree that voice recognition technology still has a long way to go, but with so many beta testers so willing to contribute to its development, I can't help but wonder why it's taking so long to shake out all the bugs.
