I've been here since late 70s. Last year we had squirrels in gutters with leaf guards. Didn't get in attic. we used to have 2 trees near house. branches rubbed on one roof somewhat, just touching. One nite in garage I heard what sounded like crunching or eating. I called an exterminator . The crunching very low sound. Exterminator determined Carpenter Ants. They in floor over garage. turns out they were in tree that touched house. They had a trail from tree and set up a branch office in house using branches as a bridge. He treated Ants in evening. Baited them and they died fast. I had both trees removed. Treated inside of house too. Good thing I heard Ants. They can eat through house probably 10 times faster than termites.

Squirrels are hilarious. I like watching them romp around the yard.

Found a dun-runned-over one along side the road a couple of days back. Kinda hoping it wasn't the one living in my big hickory tree.

I like them too and wish the cats would leave them alone! They are friggin stupid though. Chirping and carrying on, letting every cat for a mile know they are there. One, once came up the brick wall and into my Moms 11th floor condo. The cat was on it in an instant and my Mom was mortified.

I lived in a heavily wooded neighborhood for the first 24 years of my life. We had dozens and dozens of squirrels run across our roof daily. None ever did any damage to the roof. We did have one get into a storage area in the carport, but that was because there was no door. And one started chewing the trim around the door opening to the carport one year. My dad replaced the damaged board and that was that. If we'd have killed every squirrel that ran across the roof it would have been hundreds, if not a thousand.

We also had hundreds of chipmunks. I think our cat killed one about every day for 15 years or more. Yet we never had chipmunk damage to the house, and the cat never made a dent in the population.
Jeeze what a SICK MASS MURDERING CAT.
Thats 5,475 chipmunks that suffered an untimely, unnecessary death thanks to YOUR CAT!

Jeeze, it's ONE squirrel and people are telling you to shoot it. God help you if ONE woodpecker lands on your roof, or you see one raccoon, etc...

IT'S ONE ANIMAL.

I could understand some concern if it was a repeat offender and you started seeing damage, but IT'S ONE ANIMAL.

If that is a reference to my .410 comment, perhaps I was merely suggesting firing a .410 in the air would discourage the squirrel from retuning. :sneaky:
You admonish a guy for talking about shooting ONE squirrel, but your cat kills 5,000 squirrels and other small animals, and youre good with that?????

Ummmmm, yeah. I guess thats cool.

If I see a raccoon, and it’s daytime, in my trash or eating the barn cats food, YES it’s going DOWN.

That cat was an insane hunter. Chipmunks, birds, mice, squirrels, rabbits. It once dragged in a dead possum. It slept in my bed every night from the day I came home from the hospital until I was 18 years old. It died at age 21. It was a killing machine.

It's also the reason that all of MY cats have been indoor cats.

Lead pill or a humane catch-and-release trap. The are cute and fun to watch but they are still rodents and can be very destructive if allowed to go unchecked. They will chew their way in and make a filthy, smelly mess.

Absolutely. We had a couple of them chew their way into our cottage and make babies. Trapped the parents and made a little escape hole for the babies. Meanwhile, they had gotten in to a big bag of peanuts in the shell, and stashed them ALL over the cottage in very clever places. Kept finding them for years after!

Anyone know what environmental benefits squirrels provide? Are they just food for other animals?

They can (and do) lots of damage to homes and sheds.

My dog chased them around day and night. Never caught one. The dog would sit at the base of the tree and bark for 15 minutes with the squirrel just looking down.

Then he’d move to the next tree and repeat.

Poor dog. Just once I wished he’d been successful.
