GM comes up with some wacky ideas at times, like their cylinder cut out to increase corporate fuel economy. You cut out cylinders and the start running dry and then they burn oil. I know with my wife's 'Burb., first thing I did was disable that with a Range Electronics module.

Didn't buy it for fuel mileage in the first place. No one gets 'mileage' with a Burb. They are bona-fide guzzlers.

Little word to the wise, avoid the Ford 10 speed slush box. My BIL was the lead designer and even he told me to avoid them. Never asked why but I'm sure he has a good reason.

Good call with the Range chip, my coworkers also swear by them. The cylinder deactivation system was "active fuel management" or AFM, where they always cut off the same 4 cylinders - Not a good idea. It might not burn much extra oil at first, but seems like when they cross ~100k miles, it can pick up quick.

Their newer system is called DFM, or Dynamic fuel management, which randomly cycles all cylinders to disable them individually only for a single firing cycle each - pretty awesome technology and way less trouble with long term oil consumption. I think Delphi invented it. Your v8 engine can be running on as few as 2 cylinders at a time, so for any given engine cycle (two revolutions), 6 cylinders skip their fuel injection, and it cycles this pattern through all 8 cyls. Can run on any % of cylinders based on requested load, from 2 out of 8 up through all 8.

In any case, GM just pulled both AFM and DFM from their 5.3L V8s because they can't source enough microchips.... crazy.

Also have a former coworkers who moved on to working in the Livonia transmission plant and says the same thing - avoid the Ford 10 spd. But to be fair, they dont seem to be acting up or failing in the field. Maybe they fixed things?

GM updated the later AFM engines with better PCV baffling etc....check the TSBs relating with those very early ones.

GM is using it, too. It's a Ford design but gm uses it in their 1500's, 'burbies, Tahoes and Camaro's.

GM and Ford made a deal to engineer two (2) transmissions. One for FWD, one for RWD.

Ford got assigned the RWD and created the 10R80, which is by all accounts an excellent transmission. Even the Camaro boys like them.

GM came up with the 9 speed for their contribution to FWD trans.

Ford almost immediately tossed it in the trash and came up with an 8 Speed, which they're still using.

The 10R80 has been around for several years now (in its 5th year) and there's no real complaints about it. The early ones shifted hard but that's been remedied.

Buddy of mine has one in his GenII EcoBeast and let me tell you -- It will move

And maybe he was wrong. I frequent the forums for all the big 3. Neither Ford nor GM is having any major issues with that new 10 speed...and by all accounts the 8 speed in the Rams and Jeeps is excellent.

But I doubt I'll be trying out any of them. My Dodge/Cummins with the heavy duty cast iron 6 speed manual tranny will last me, at my age, the rest of my life.

Of course when a vehicle is expensed or written off for business, it can't be compared to personal use. A diesel truck you can totally write off on your taxes, and then still enjoy the good money you get by selling it off the books! It almost feels wrong!

Well, it feels wrong because it is wrong!

I’m sure you were not implying anyone on TBN would cheat on their taxes.

I have sold written off equipment, and irritated my accountant by asking, how do I declare this income, and he might as well have asked, are you just slow, boy?

Like financially speaking, it doesn't exist anymore, and you want to bring it back from the dead and PAY TAXES on it again? Is that what you want to do?

Been a few years since NV5600 been in a Ram. You are lucky you have no salt. A 15 year old truck is all but junk here unless never winter driven or you want a new cab, box, doors, fenders etc.
