Skeins1 and TYMNorsky you guys make some nice looking logs for sure. 70 degrees here and the snow is almost completely gone. That doesn't happen very often the first week of April. Finished blocking up my firewood in the heat. :)

Looks like the blackflies coming earlier this year also.

Don, doesn't you wood still always get wet with the tote liners tucked inside the tote frame like that? I would think all the water will just trickle down the sides, over the wood ends, and run through all the wood still. I always make sure to get a half sheet of plywood sitting out over the top edge of the tote frame, or my tarp shed setup pulled out over the edges too.
I also use the totes with similar "lids" like Shooterdon. But only the outer ends get a little wet, they dry quickly in the sun/air, so I don't seem to have a problem. I have for the first time however found mouse nests in the middle of the stacked wood. I thought I was packing them fairly tight, but I guess they liked that. This has made me change my thinking of Tote storage. I will have to leave them outside, and just bring in the logs, my original plan was to put the entire full tote in the garage, that no longer feels like a good idea.

Yeeeeahhh, I wouldn't. I find nests in about 1 out of 4 totes of mine. I actually pack 16" firewood in my totes in two rows with as MUCH gap between the rows as I can. I don't try to pack it tight (theres always a terrific little snug hole for a mouse nest). My thinking is that having a 3-6" channel open down the middle of the tote will A) improve drying rates and B) discourage nesting without as snug or secret a spot to build a nest, and also cold air blowing right through in the winter time.

I was concerned about it but figured I never tarped my wood all the way down so gave it a try. The first year I did 4 as a trial and it worked out. Last year I got the other 28 totes. I had the wood processed and stored in those totes by the end of June. It has worked out well wrt keeping the wood dry. Granted we do not get a lot of rain, and when the wood is being seasoned I place it where it gets a lot of sun. Those bins act like little green houses in the sun. Snow is not a concern at all...much better than trying to get the ice/snow off a tarp.

After my post, I saw the mouse nest comment. I found two mouse nests in the 12 totes used so far this year.

But I get mice in the garage anyway so I used a bucket trap this year. In the fall, I must have killed about 25 of the little pests over two months, and then only a few during the winter...maybe one a week if that. I LOVE my bucket trap.

Since I get mice anyway, if the totes add another dozen it is immaterial. They cannot resist peanut butter used for bait on the bucket trap. BTW, I use RV anti-freeze so I can just throw the dead mice in the woods.

stacking in the crate is the Mrs' job, and I am not about to tell her how to do her job!! All kidding aside, if the wood is wet/green, we leave more gap, but I try to cut logs, then split it when it's drier so they take less time to dry to burning moisture content.

I was going to post this in the “Safety” forums but it seems to fit better in this thread.

I can’t tell exactly what happened. However, AWOL member “OldPath” commented several times of the need for stops with your bucket forks, to keep logs from rolling up over the top.
Be careful out there, if you find you are getting tired call it a day.

We were able to get it all the ash logs I had left cut and stacked. Now I'll have to get to the locust piles. Saturday was a good day to be in the woods.
