That is what man has been doing from the beginning...How do people get so gullible and naive that they are overcome by the Henny Penny syndrome...?
I take it you are not a prepper. While it's true that civilizations take centuries to fall, our technotopia is more fragile than most people realize. One Carrington Event or an EMP attack would turn EVs into yard art. We're already seeing climate refugees from Central America on our borders. How are we going to handle that when they start arriving by the millions instead of the tens of thousands?

Meanwhile, nobody wants to pay for maintaining our decaying infrastructure, much less building it for future needs. Other countries are doing better, so we can plan on sinking back to the status of 20th century Spain while China and Brazil take over world leadership. I have my doubts the US will survive anyway. Foreign agents are pushing us to dissolve the union and turn us into a collection of Balkan states.

I automatically assume anyone speculating on USAs demise is a Russian plant spreading dissent.

Climate refugees?
More like free handout refugees.
Always, always, always follow the money.
People come here for the money.
How will we handle millions of refugees coming to the US? As deplorable as it is, I believe border security would be in order, and maybe helping some of these potentate dictators understand how to run their own countries properly, so their citizens don’t leave.
And while we are on the subject, if they are climate refugees, isn’t the climate in the US also really deplorable? What remedy exactly would the refugees be seeking by stepping into the US? Does the climate just change to a perfect utopian climate in the US? Hardly not. It’s the printed money and ever dwindling security they seek here. Who wouldnt?

As far as paying for decaying infrastructure goes, we all know billions have been spent and trillions more are currently proposed. Previous administrations efforts of 900 billion for "shovel ready" infrastructure projects have shown to be boondoggles, not so "shovel ready" afterall. The American people know "infrastructure” funds will be misallocated, rife with fraud and improperly budgeted. Waste, “roads & bridges to nowhere”. Weve seen all of that for decades. It’s been proven over and over again.

While helping people with COPD breath easier is important but even more important to me is doing things which may lower the risk of new COPD cases in 2070.

At the core I may be of a more independent mindset than most of 70+ age group when it comes to energy for my life needs and wants.

I do not have the money to dig a oil well and put in refinery even if I could get the permits to become energy independent.

However for the price of a top of the line gas Ford F-150 pickemup truck I can mine, store and distribution my own energy needs at no net NEW cost over time.

With some thought I can make it semi portable. Our son can help design and maintain our independent energy solution and make it his sooner or later.

We can try to stay energy dependent on others but the opportunity to become energy independent if we have our own place is becoming more realistic every year. We can start acting today or just be a spectator as history evolves.

Elon Musk is ok with new nuclear power plants as long as not built on the ocean beaches or fault lines.

On EV rebate reasoning (if there is any) it may be to try prevent the massive down sizing of Ford and GM by Chinese firms. BYD just picked up a Mercedes account selling them the EV Blade Battery technology. Toyota has decided to jump into the world of EVs by doing a joint venture with BYD for their skate board chassis loaded their EV Blade Battery technology.

BYD and Tesla are the only world class EV makers with BYD being more diverse.
I would also include SAIC in that
their affordable four-seat Hong Guang Mini electric outsells Tesla 2 to 1 in their home market.

Also still think the Marvel X (now Marvel R) Sold as an MG in other countries checks all of the boxes for a conventional style Electric SUV also fully 5G connectivity even a 300 person conference call from inside the car.
Alcontara and Napa leather 5 seater 69.9 KW battery augmented reality display and Navigation, 21 inch screen Intelligent all wheel drive will be the first with fast wireless vehicle charging. power Moon roof and Sunshade.
This is what the new Chevy Bolt could / should have been

So why don’t the people running the country sell all the polluting gas/diesel vehicles in their fleets and use our tax dollars to buy all electric vehicles? Not just a token few to make the average slob feel bad about himself. ALL of them. They could do a much better job of setting the example, yet even with trillions of dollars at their disposal, they do not seem to be doing so.

Electric vehicles in many cases, predate gas powered vehicles. They have been around forever. The prices of the materials and technology to build batteries versus the cheap abundance of oil and the power of the oil companies was probably the reason gas powered vehicles got the head start on electric.

Well, lets not get the cart before the horse. All these flowery reports of the EV saving the planet but not much on where the dead batteries end up.

Recycling of the batteries should be in the discussion. Any manufacturer of an EV should be responsible for the disposal or recycling of a hazardous material.

Once again, the downstream effect of a mass produced product has environmental consequences.
