They (UP) ALSO use power (generator) cars to provide electricity to the passenger cars that don't have their own generators.
Fixed that for ya. Not many steam runs here in the Midwest can opt from UP's full complement of accessory equipment. Consists often include a GP for extra electric power. C'mon down and ride behind a Berkshire.

I see that most 'Berks' still use bushed rod bearings while Northerns and the Big Boys have mostly been upgraded to rollers. RBs/boxes are usually painted white here in the states and yellow in Britain. See 'em on side-rods and tender trucks. Thanks for posting the work-shop photos!

I'm now working in a "recycling" center and today I was tasked to cutting up some old rail. This came from C&H stamp mill. I cut that 1884 date right off in the 3rd photo. It was under my 3ft mark. :( That rail was worn to crap and hardly anthing left of it for the rust. That's why I decided that date must be 1884. Thought you guys might like to see this.

Kind of surprised you don't have a chopper. When I worked at a scrap yard (ran a roll off for them), they had a rail chopper that chopped it into pieces for remelt. That machine would devour rail like no tomorrow.

I got more photos or rail markings today. Most of it was Cambria steel and all was dated pre turn of the century. I'll post photos after I get them processed. Can anyone tell me why Cambria steel is a rather famous steel mill?

When I walk the abandoned rail lines I will see piles of steel rail with brush and trees growing up through it. Hard to believe it’s not worth going back to get it. One pile had about 1000 ft of it, not to mention the abandoned rails themselves.
