Here is some nice footage of a grader car working in the Twin Cities of MN. I'd not seen this before.
I've never seen anything like that either. Quite a unique machine. Could hear the Detroit Diesel powering it quite clearly, but never heard the locomotive's engine.

I'd also never seen an SD30C-ECO before. According to Wikipedia, CP has 50 of them. They were built on SD40-2 chassis, with all new electronics, new cabs, SD45 style flared radiators, and 12V710, 3000hp prime movers. Interestingly, they were built to only comply with Tier 0 emissions standards.

Have an opportunity to ride one of these 2 excursions this week:
1. The Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway
2. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

Anyone been on either?
Suggestions?

Wife and I road the Pikes Peak Cog Railway back in 1997. It was quite picturesque. Couldn't tell you what the views were like from the top, though, as it was 70 and sunny at the start and about 10F with howling wind and white-out at the top. Solid ice everywhere. It was all we could do to walk from the train to the gift shop, have a warm beverage, and wait for the trip back down. 😬

So, I'd pick the Royal Gorge Route if I had to choose. :ROFLMAO:

Seriously, though, the cog railway was almost all views looking out and down. Saw a lot of grass, rocks, and marmots. Then snow. I think the view from the gorge would be more impressive. It seems views looking down never give a good perspective how high you are VS views looking up. I base that on the Grand Canyon looks like a hole from the top, but from the bottom, WOW!

Good luck choosing. (y)

Do the cog railway. I think it just reopened this year after several years of being shut down. I've rafted the Royal Gorge and the part of the deep gorge is relatively short.

The UP just made a new promotional video about the Big boy's summer tour. I can't locate it on you tub now but if anyone notes it, please post it here.

Made it to Cheyenne yesterday. Stopped to visit 4004. Went to Frontier Days to check out some rodeo. Great day. Perfect weather
