On a similar note, I'm looking next spring to assemble a 'geothermal' air conditioning by pumping water from the bottom of the lake (it's source fed so the lake bottom is almost always cold) into an old radiator near the cottage that would then circulate that cooled air into the cottage. Water leaving the radiator will be returned to the lake.

Within limits that could work as weak heat source to keep a building above freezing. Throw in a water source heat pump if you ever need all season comfort

I have looked into that. Suggest you throw a loop into the lake. Pump your clean working fluid through the pipe. Keeps the inside of your radiators clean.

The equations for heat transfer are not hard. Many geothermal sites have done the math for you.

Edit: You can not suck water up a pipe higher than 25' or so. Somewhere around 30' is the physical limit under ideal conditions with a perfect vacuum to draw it up. But if you have a loop you can push your working fluid most any height. A loop into the lake and back out.

Then once you have had your fun, replace the radiator with a geothermal heat pump.

Do you think that he'll do it again? Some people are more important than the rest of us. Years ago I went deep sea fishing with a group from work. One guy showed up late with his new GF, so left his car in a no parking zone. When we got back his car had been towed... I've always wondered how impressed that made his date.
