I think the union leaders agreed with the new contract, but the workers voted it down. Union leaders looking after their jobs?

No, negations ended when they ran out of time on the old contract so the union leaders took what they had and showed it to the members.

You answered your own question, to a point. The CEO gets canned when employees fail to do their work. This is especially true in a union environment where change is difficult and seniority rules over performance. In a fair situation, it would be the employees getting canned when they don't perform.

Good leaders make a huge difference in their businesses.
This. The single most important factor in every job I've had is my boss. A good boss makes everyone around them better, a bad one does the opposite. A good leader adds value that goes way beyond their salary and their immediate scope of influence, a bad one is a cancer that poisons everything they touch. I won't necessarily sit here and defend some of the crazy CEO packages you see these days but a true leader is exceptionally hard to find and can be the difference between the success and failure of the entire business, so if you do you better do all you can to keep them around.

All I have to say is: I've never heard of any instances of unions saving a company from ruin whereas you can point to numerous instances of unions causing that ruin.
Yeah but think this through. The company is never going to credit the union for its business success. The union might fight for the very pay and benefits necessary to attract and retain a dedicated and competent workforce. With out it, the company may suffer poor quality and reliability. But obviously the union isn't going to get the credit.

Head scratcher, one has to wonder without the early unions would there be(paid sick days, health care, paid vacation days, safe work environments, good pay for a good days work and so on) Pretty sure good old Henry ford and the coal mine owners could give two chits less about there employees. Are the unions perfect hell no but there are some real douche bags in management also.I been on both side of the fence to witness both.

Ford actually shocked the world offering $5 a day back in the day plus Ford also sponsored charitable endeavors that carry on today...

He was also a supporter of basic education and brought work to rural areas.

Just saying things are seldom all good or bad...

His power was absolute at the company he founded and bears his name and he took it very personal the actions of agitators as he put it...

If you don't like working at a company for any reason, you're more than welcome to find a new job. It's as simple as that. - Small business owner of 20 years
But there are far fewer cases of unions causing ruing than pure greed by owners. (selling out to venture capitalists who decimate a company, for example). As a small business owner, what would you do if someone wanted to bUy your business for a fortune and carve it into tiny pieces, leaving your workers without a job. Not their fault, but out a job nonetheless.

BUT good old Henry Ford fought the unions tooth and nail before he caved in.

Yeah, the River Rouge riot was not an especially good day in the annals of capitalist benevolence.

Please enlighten us with a good example of when the Union made a positive difference for the company and consumer.
