buying logs only until you buy the land that has the trees on it.

& yes, most of us would own the land anyway, but you still need the trees and a way to move all this wood around, I doubt you throw every log on your shoulder and walk it to the splitter.

No but I didn’t buy equipment to load logs and a dump truck to haul them just to split firewood. Option 1 my equipment can sit parked or occasionally working over the winter or option 2 I can pour diesel in it and use it for firewood. Most land owners didn’t buy the land just to cut firewood and a tractor just to help with firewood either. Using something you already own for more uses cost you very little and actually drives the overall cost of ownership down.

I just don't trust someone who didn't finish medical school working on my back!! But ironically, I'd try acupuncture if it hurt that bad.
Well come on down... I'm sure I can find some needles or something like them around here!!

I understand having the equipment around for other things, but the wear and tear on the unit should be factored into the end cost of the final product, right? Now if you use your mini ex to move some logs around is different than using your dumptruck for every delivery if that's the only way you deliver the wood. If you factor in fuel costs per load, shouldn't you factor in wear & tear? Now of course this is all in response to a quick paragraph I threw together to make a funny point for deezler and his free equipment!! I wasn't outlining a firewood business model, just making a point like John_Mc was factoring in pain meds and copays.

At the local fancier grocery stores, bundles of firewood are now $7 apiece. For like 5 or 6 good pieces of split firewood. I'm pretty sure I could make some money at a dollar a stick. Been trying to convince my son to get into wrapping bundles that we could sell out by the road frontage with a deposit box.

Yes it would be fair to assess equipment wear and tear per load. But it’s not much. I’m only putting a few hours a year on the mini x to cut firewood. If you’re a homeowner cutting your personal wood I’d worry even less about it. You bought your tractor to work. Work it and don’t worry about it.

Maybe i missed it, but can you show what your mini-x does to help split firewood? Was it the cleaver and plate setup in lieu of a bucket? I’m having a hard time picturing how that could be efficient for mass production

I don’t actually split anything with the mini x. I just use it for moving logs, holding the wood to cut and I help position the big rounds with it.

I joke that at campground prices, I'm sittin' on about $1M...

I usually bring an entire row, stacked to the bed rails. Don't usually use it all in a weekend, but it's there...
