Tractor
Ford 861
Hi Folks ... I have a Ford 861 (Selectomatic Shift) ... I parked the tractor a couple months ago and haven't started it since ... Now it won't start ... I want to put it inside for the winter BUT the wheels do NOT roll freely ... They seem to go in opposite direction when I pull the tractor ... What am I doing wrong ? ... Thanks for any help ... John

Sounds like it's in gear. Make sure to shift to neutral.

Thanks for replying ... I tried neutral and reverse and 1st and second gears ...

Sounds like even though you "shifted" it into neutral, it didn't go into neutral.

Apparently there is something wrong with the shifting mechanism it should roll fine in neutral
have you checked to make sure there is plenty of oil in the transmission ?

It has been 35+ years since I was around a select-o-speed and do not recall if they will shift into neutral without the engine running. Hopefully someone with a better memory will chime in.

IIRC Ford select-o-speed trans has a release mechanism that enables tractor to be towed without sliding rear tires.

Exactly. The transmission defaults to park when not running. Right side of the rear axle housing above the running board.

THANK YOU all for the replies ... I will check the one above today ... Is it a lever or what ? ...

Thanks to everyone here ... I took a long shot and asked a 95 year old man down the road ... Said he had a "Select-O-Speed 861" like mine and still had the manual ... Here is what I found ... see attached ... I feel dumb ... John
