I have a 1995 Ford 1715 which has become stuck in gear. Hi-Low range but it wont come out of 2nd gear. I took plate off and can see the gears which appear to be OK. No obvious signs of damage or cause for the lock up. Does anyone have any suggestions to get it unstuck other than to call a dealer. Any suggestions appreciated.

Did you see or lose the detent ball or spring? any pics? with the clutch pedal fully compressed can you move the shift fork forward or backward?

JC, Yes I do have the spring and it does appear to be a problem with the ball bearing looking ball in the bottom of the spring tube. It looks like it is not allowing the shifter to slide the gear. Simple description. does the ball have to be pulled out or depressed down. ? Or is this something I should just call a dealer for. I was trying to avoid a costly repair bill.

Take a magnet and pull the balls out. Be careful not to drop it in transmission. if so you'll have to fish it out. Spring will push the ball down and causes some friction as the shifter rod goes forward or backward, once it over the hole the ball falls in the indentation of shifter rod and spring keeps it steady without jumping out. If the ball is out of round and shifter bar has rusting on it can make it difficult to move. Ball in the hole without the spring can not cause significant drag on the shaft. See if you can move the shifter while you have the clutch pressed fully and held done by an assistant or help of 2x4 , bungee cord or something to keep down and report back.

JC,

OK, I was able to get one ball out, but shifter does still not shift back and forth. Should there be more than one ball bearing. Looks like there may be another but shaft does not slide far enough for to come into the opening enough to get a hold of it. Any ideas. The one I took out looks to be fine.

Do you have range shifter and gear shifter on top of transmission ? shifter boss (a metal block) is attached to shifter rod. For any given shifter rod you have one ball and detent mechanism. On my 1700 I have four (two for the range and two for the gear shifter). Can you post a picture?

Bill,

Take your time, I'll give a good chance that you can fix it. There are several things we can suggest to get to the bottom of it. I just checked NH website. you do have one shifter and two shift rods, have two shifter boss's, two springs and two ball each.

JC,

Yes My tractor has one shift lever with two shift rods what I believe you are calling two shift bosses. My range selector is on the side near fender.
