"In January 2020, U.S. crude oil production reached a peak of 12.8 million b/d. But with federal and state lockdowns halting travel over coronavirus fears, demand for oil dropped and production became too expensive to maintain."

Sounds like the cost of refining has gone up over the years and it is a threshold which production has to be so high to keep from operating at a loss.
Economies of scale... Close to 20 years ago I "coined" the phrase "Economies Of Scale In Reverse." That which goes up must come down. That which gets big eventually gets small. Failing to understand that everything operates under the influence of the parabolic curve can only result in severe head-scratching, or worse...

I was under the impression that domestic production slows down as the price drops, due to higher costs. I always have heard that North Dakota oil is a money losing endeavor when crude is under $80 per barrel.
So, it's still a money-maker if it only produces ONE barrel of oil at $80? It's about economies of scale. Yes, they don't have the scale necessary to drive the price, which is why production is very price-sensitive (real world pricing that is- hard to compete with much cheaper sources).

The move to EV'S or not is a historical decision.

Some seem to fear China's success but China's failure concerns me more.

50 years the fear was Japan was going to own all the farmland in Arkansas. Many USA business would be closed by July 4th should all China goods and services stop flowing on this Valentine's day.

The Japanese car makers are into EVs so means China will replace our Japanese ICEV's over the next 20 years.

Remember the danger of living in fear. The fears that we have often do not materialize and it is things that we did not have our eyes on that will totally take us out.

A real risk for those of us who have retired is that we will give up 50% of all our funds preparation for retirement due to inflation over the next 10 to 15 to 20 years. That is a real concern.
But also, remember the danger of only caring about yourself. While you and older people may be worried (legitimately) about running out of money from inflation, we need to leave younger AmericaNTS with places for people to work and build products for our survival and national security.
Owning everything built cheaply in China is a race to the bottom for us.
Its a short term sugar high of cheap products followed by higher unemployment, lower national security and a workforce that no longer can produce anything.

Chinese aggression? You know what they say about pointing a finger?
In my lifetime there’s only one country that’s at the top of the list for going around the world invading countries, toppling governments, and removing leaders. And it ain’t China. (Hint: Russia is a very distant second.) China’s too busy building 25,000 miles of high speed bullet trains, cities, canals, highways and other infrastructure that would blow the average American mind if they knew what actually goes on in other countries.
And who funded all that? American capitalistic greed did. Both at the corporate globalist manufacturing level and the Walmart shopper level.
Not everything sold in WalMart is made in China and not everything sold at small stores is made in USA.
Its up to the BUYER to read the label.
I guess the Chinese flying bombers over Taiwan is a peaceful act?
And trying to buy off American college professors, being caught in acts of espionage and patent infringement, sometimes on top secret information is just peaceful commerce? Have you ever seen the backlog of patent infringement cases against them?

OhhhhKayyyy

No doubt theyre modernizing and building EVs at an amazing pace. I wont argue with that. I wish we could do that by attracting more business here and tax them at a reasonable level. I also would like to see EVs built HERE if possible IF we must be forced to drive them.
