Big Cars are killing Americans

A long ago newspaper article about some research by the Army at Yuma Proving Ground on washboard roads said that it was speed dependent. If I remember correctly, the critical speed was 18 mph. Below that they didn't form. Above 18, they couldn't be prevented.

I agree with you 100%!!! I once took my girlfriend (now my wife) to visit family at the end of a very long, straight dirt road that was always washboarded. Once you turned off the highway on that road, there was a short paved segment before the washboard portion. She was mortified when I picked up speed when approaching but was just as surprised that it only produced a slight humming as the truck was skimming along and we’d go approx 5 miles before we arrived to their house. Only problem? We had to slow down and it sure shook the truck as if we were experiencing turbulence before coming to a stop!

"Big cars are killing Americans" Actually - the way people choose to drive is what kills Americans.

I have a large pickup - the Taco Wagon - 7540#. So far, I've not killed or injured a single person.

I once owned a '72 Ford LTD; I'm pretty sure it had killed many a pedestrian, but I wouldn't know, I never got it on the road and sold it for $20.

In some of those "full-sized" cars, It was easy to hit a pedestrian and not know it, as the driver's position was about half a block behind the front bumper.

I had a 1980 cadilac el dorado and hte hood was about 18 foot long. You couldn't make a uturn on an 8 lane highway, it's turning radius was that of a battleship.

Maybe pedestrians are being run over because they have their noise canceling headphones in while jogging, they never knew what hit them because they did not see it coming because they're on the wrong side of the road.

And jogging has to be the dumbest thing on the planet. Wasting energy accomplishing nothing while paying someone to mow your lawn or pick up your leaves or tend your garden.

It's hard to pin you for murder when your bumper is in one county, and you're waaaay back there in the next county over; now it's just involuntary manslaughter.

That's using your noodle. 🤔

You only hit half the bumps when you
speed. In my younger day was driving
on a sandy road 70 mph went across a
train track can't explain how it happened
but as soon as we hit the sand on the
other side we shot right back across the
tracks.
