I am curious to see what machines the people who say that there is a "green tax" are comparing a Deere to. The other major equipment manufacturers (CNH and Kubota)...
Good post, but do note that I included Kubota in the same boat with Deere, when I wrote the OP. At least from my observance of the forum, they are treated the same in this regard, and I do believe rightfully so.

OK, so here is a head to head example. The JD 4044M vs the Kubota L4760 vs the TYM T494. All equipped with HST, loader, 2 rear remotes, 3rd function valve, R4 tires, cruise, suspension seat, draw bar, telescopic link ends and sway bars.

JD = $48885. Kubota= $50976. TYM=$30300

It is one thing to pay a premium, it is quite another to pay upwards of 50% more.

Now we just need used prices for each at 5 yrs old, 1,000 hrs.

Every one talks how great JD dealer support is but they have been the worst to deal with

My 72 year old grandma took her 755 to an ag dealer and they said it's too small and they dont have time. They send her to a lawnmower jd place. They want to charge her $1200 for an oil change, fuel filter change and sharpen the mmm blades.

I ended up driving 190 miles each way to take care of it for her

Another thing to consider is commonality of the tractor you purchase. The poor guy with the massey has a model that wasn’t all that popular and didn’t run for a long time. The farm I worked at had all older Massey’s from the late 70s - late 80s. They were popular models and still had parts readily available.

Just like my old case I had. If it was a standard trans I could have gotten factory new parts for a 60s tractor. But being it was a case o matic , they weren’t all that common and parts are nearly non existent.

I shopped hard and looked at all brands and got quotes. Couldn’t not see a reason to spend almost 20k more for a comparable kubota. Dealer pretty much said well it’s a kubota. Okay show me why it’s better and cost more, they couldn’t. Not to mention you had to add everything.

In my case the nearest town is 7 miles away that has tractor dealers. One dealers sells big case stuff and Kubota also. The other dealer sells JD. I could drive to get other brands. The nearest Kioti dealer is roughly a 2 hour drive.

This is so much a personal issue, we could talk about it forever. I don't like to throw money away, but I can afford what I want and for big investments, I know there is more than just money. When I went tractor shopping 12 years ago there were only three choices less than 50 miles away - John Deere, Kubota and New Holland. There wasn't much difference in price and I couldn't deal with the Kubota treadle and the NH just didn't seem to be that well made.

Today, the NH dealer is a Mahindra dealer, the Kubota dealer closed up and the JD dealer has a big new facility even closer to me. In general they have been great to deal with. However I called them about a valve adjustment and they apologized and told me it would be 5 weeks to get to it because they were so backed up with end of harvest ag equipment service, so I will probably do it myself.

I probably could have found another brand at a dealer 50 to 100 miles away and saved a few thousand dollars. To some people, that might be the difference between having a tractor or not. But now, 12 years and 1100 hours later, I've got a machine I'm very comfortable with and, beyond normal service, the repairs have been one fan belt, one tire, one battery and a few hydraulic connection O-rings. Green's been good to me.

I wonder what you could save if you ordered a JD tractor with no paint? :ROFLMAO:

I own 2 Kubota's (neither are hydrostats so no treadle pedal) I have a JD dealer about the same distance as the Kubota dealer but my Kubota dealer has a much better attitude than the JD dealer so it's Kubota for the win for me and far as cost (at least on parts and filters) they are about equal.

I'm color blind anyway
