Rant: Modern household appliances are of poorer quality

We still have our Maytag wringer washer in the shop as a backup and it still runs like new.
I remember my grandmother using those. And I still see them in some of the rural villages in my state. Still working, and I doubt they were made any more recently than the 1960s.

You can still get parts. I broke the agitator a year ago and bought a replacement one on Flea Bay. The one we have belonged to my wife's grandmother. Very manual and very good at washing clothes.

Back in the mid-60s my mother bought a top of the line Compac vacuum cleaner, thinking that it would last longer. It didn't.

One beef I have against new washers; a lot of my outdoor winter wear holds a lot of water, so I used to put through an extra spin cycle to get more of the water out. I can't do that with the electronic controls. A few years ago I was having trouble with my waterpump so tried to run a load by carrying water down from my spring and filling it through the top. It pumped all of that water out, then tried to start over again. That's not something most people will encounter, yet it was still a PITA.

Sears still exist in some forms, mostly as a name bought by their old ceo after he ran them into the ground.
Sears Parts Direct is one offshoot, so is their (few) appliance repair centers.

My daughter had a newer washer. She filled it up with sheets I think it was with he intention of letting them soak for a bit. Went downstairs couple hours later the washer was dry. Apparently after 1/2 hour I think she said it was, it empties on it's own.
The same machine didn't allow you to set your own water level, the washer 'sensed' the amount of laundry and set it automatically. My question is why?
I'm dreading when I have to replace my apartment size, mechanical switches set that started making noises a while ago.

My guess is that the sensing feature is to save water because it sets the water level according to the load instead of a fixed small, medium, large fill.

I knew my GE washer was having issues and bought an Amana that I thought was just a basic model like I've used to for years. I didn't realize it had the sensing feature until I went to use it for the first time. The agitation cycle is also different.

Not to turn to politics, please don’t, but I saw talk of the government coming out with possible mandates for appliances, mainly to save on electricity and water, that won’t make them any better or cheaper.

I have a new "water saver" toilet which seems to work well. I've only been using it for about a year and a half yet have only plugged it once. It uses just 2 gallons/flush; which was kind of nice last week when my pipes froze and I was carrying water down from the spring.

That's where I got sucked in years ago. Replaced all my dependable 30 year old stuff because they said all this new Energy Star rated stuff was going to save me thousands.
Never noticed any difference in my power bill, but I get to buy new appliances every couple years now.

I have an old chest freezer down in my shed. It's rusty, a few years ago I sanded the bad spots down and painted them with appliance paint. Before that the cover fell off... I had to drill new holes and move the hinges. Yet it keeps on freezing. Right now I have 3 freezers going, my frig, electric hot water and electric backup heat. My power bill last month was $55.00.
