I got the Woodland Mills WG24 grinder two weeks ago and am actually quite impressed. I have on my Deere 2038R which handles it quite nicely. Of course the teeth are new so it's performing at its peak. I've done about 25 stumps so far with a blend of fresh cut stumps and stumps that have started to decay. But for a small inexpensive grinder again, I am impressed.

I had a Worksaver 36" grinder many years ago that I used on my Deere 4720. That was a beast and was of course much faster than my small grinder. But when I factor in the added maneuverability of the smaller tractor and grinder at least at my place, I really don't lose that much efficiency. For really large stumps and for commercial grinding the big grinder is clearly the better choice. But for the property owner using needing stumps removed I think they would be satisfied with the smaller grinder.

I've got the Woodland Mills, and I have it on a gear drive tractor with creep gears. It works perfectly, you don't need the whiner tranny IF you have creep gears.

I've ground quite a few stumps with mine and it works just fine, in fact I ground 32 stumps one day and made back half of what I paid for the grinder.

What I surmised and why I bought the LP articulated unit (that is paid for but not here yet..lol Both of my M9's have not only the optional creep gears but the 540 6 spline and the 1000 21 spline pto. Both were factory options when I purchased mine (back before I retired) and could well afford it.

I have a huge amount of unsighhtly stumps to grind. I really dislike stumps in general. The look bad, hard to mow around too. I'm gonna be busy once it delivers, for a while plus I'm getting grinding jobs but again, don't know what to charge.

In a way, I'm sorry I sold the PTO chipper but I don't mind roasting brush as I'm a closet pyro anyway.

I have 3, very large stumps that I'll need to grind, they are all at least 4 feet at grade level, the rest are smaller. All on my rental properties so I don't have to look at them, glad of that but they still need to be gone.

Watched many a YT video about getting rid of stumps and they all seem to entail burning them over a long period of time, something I don't want to do.

The LP is gonna get a workout I suspect.

Nice to know the gear tactor with creeper gears work. it is a nice little machine. My teeth need sharpening quite often because of rocks everywhere including beside under and inside stumps.

Kind of partial to the 'Wearsharp' Greenteeth. The concave carbide cuts better with less power.

What tractor are you running it on? Have any tips for us fellow gear drive operators?

I have roughly 15 3'+ maple stumps I need to grind and another 5 6' white pine stumps. Its prob about $1000 in stump rental prices.

Go slow, and If you have any common sense at all, you will figure it out pretty fast.

NYONE, without creeper gears the front to back style grinders will not work well. stump grinder needs 540 pto rpm and 1st gear at pto rated RPM is usually too fast unless you make many small passes.

the grinders that move side to side with a cylinder are a better fit for a geared tractor but they are usually about double the price.

those are some big stumps, good luck with your project.

What I have a 3 point mounted swing unit (Landpride SG 24) but you really still need creeper gears to operate it efficiently and yes, they aren't a cheap date, about a couple grand more than the Woodland Mills or the Baumalite. and remember the grinder teeth are consumables as well and not a cheap date either.

One nice thing about the Landpride is it takes the Industry standard Green Teeth so replacement is easy plus the will index to 3 cutting positions before they need replaced plus Green sells the appropriate pockets which are also a wear item. The Landpride, the Erskine and the Bradco are basically all the same.

I've already picked up a couple outside jobs, grinding stumps. Charging 10 bucks an inch measured across the base which seems reasonable to me. Just quoted a 30 stump job the other day up town. I'm sure I'll get it as no one around here grinds stumps and most arborists don't own a grinder.

Nice thing is, I can put the tractor and the grinder on my trailer and haul it anywhere I want to.

Not quite double. More like half again as much. Not only do the swing types swing, but you can control the cut depth easily. My LP will cut 10" below grade and swing over a 3 foot stump without repositioning the tractor.
