Non-working spouses and 20 something college students are not a trivial percentage of the labor pool. And early retirements are at lot more common than in the past.

You do know those demographics have always been accounted for in the participation rate and any change is very slight.

I don't think your grasping what is driving the participation rate drop off...

Whatever your opinion, there’s no question that we gave a tight labor market that is driving up both wages and general prices. There’s not one small business that doesn’t have a help wanted sign.

Honestly I think some of the problem is the new workers perceptions and attitudes about having a job. I think they want too much for too little. And that is why there is a help wanted sign in every shop window... it should be a worker wanted sign which more clearly show the problem. Young people who typically fill entry level jobs don't want those jobs. They want to be rich influencers, rich sports stars, rich entrepreneurs, not entry level cooks and sales personnel. Not too many people will reach these lofty goals. I think young people are in for a rude awaking some years from now.
This is why we have $15 hamburgers and nobody to cook them.
I can still buy $7 ground beef and make a few big burgers in the comfort of my home.
I can shop for nearly anything I need or want online without a sales person or a brick and mortar store...
So In my world they just F-ed themselves out of a job. That's no skin off my nose.
Hope they enjoy life in Mom's basement in a welfare state.

A much higher percentage of young people are in college today. And I don’t think that most are screwing themselves out of a job. My sons both did those part time service jobs at one point, but my youngest completed his masters and got a job as a financial controller for a construction company within 6 months, making good money. My oldest is still plugging away for his PhD and will no doubt end up with a career job once he’s done. But during all those years, they weren’t participating in the labor pool. I’m sure this varies around the country, but there’s a huge shift in demographics of young people in the labor pool. They are delaying full time work for much longer than in the past. When I graduated, entry level was a Bachelor’s degree, now it’s a Master’s in many professions. I know there are good opportunities in the skilled trades, but I’m simply stating what is happening with the young adults today. No, they don’t want those service jobs. It is what it is.

My point is if you look at current HS graduates, many aren’t entering the labor force, and a much higher percentage are staying out of the labor force for years while they obtain advanced degrees. These are many of the young people who are not part of the participation rate. I delayed participation for 4 years while in school, many are now delaying for 8 years while getting advanced degrees. They participate part time or during summers.

Both of our kids worked while they were in college. One worked the front desk at her dorm. The other worked at veterinary clinics and animal labs on campus. I worked full-time and a couple part-time jobs while going to tech college. It can be done and people are still doing it, but even when I was in school many years ago, not that many full-time students worked except during summers.

When I was a kid the commissary (military grocery store) had kids that did that. Only pay was tips. There was a waiting list for those jobs.

The overall college enrollment rate decreased from 41 percent in 2010 to 38 percent in 2021. This was driven by the decrease in the college enrollment rate for 2-year institutions, which fell from 13 to 8 percent over the same period. In comparison, the rate for 4-year institutions in 2021 (30 percent) was not measurably different from the rate in 2010.
