They had special trucks that allowed then to reverse in 25 to 30 MPH as only one truck could be in the slot at a time and time is money.

They had drivers that would back up 1/2 mile or so in a 12’ wide slot using only their mirrors at 25 MPH.

It was mesmerizing to watch these specialists.

It shouldn't take a special truck to back up that fast, any truck with a Roadranger or high-low range transmission can back up pretty fast in reverse high range. BTDT.

Rain gutters on cars of that period were stout for sure, but I would not feel comfortable.

It's the welded seam where the roof panel meets the rest of the structure, and that's rollover resistant. So I wouldn't worry about strength. But goofy handling on the road seems possible.

That photo of the leisure-suit pale green jumbo Chev with its matching trailer reminded me of a real crash I came upon. Gramps and Gram hanging upside down in their seatbelts in a pale green Cadillac, a twin to that Chev, with a matching too-big bumper-pull green travel trailer also upside down and still aligned perfectly. Except now they were pointed uphill. They had come to a stop grinding along against the freeway center divider wall on a long curving grade coming down Donner Pass. The wall was scratched for as long ways, no impact, the whole rig had apparently swerved and gone over due to crosswind or something. Vehicle colors and general appearance nearly identical to that roof-tow photo. A vacation to remember!

Yeah even the new auto shift trucks have 2 reverse gears.

I cannot recall which towing thread taught me this lesson, but I wanted to thank the experts at TBN for saving me time and perhaps more.

I was towing wrong today. Had a SxS on my trailer and was going down the road. Got up to about 30 mph and it starts to wiggle. Even before TBN, I knew this was bad. Thanks to TBN, I knew exactly what was wrong and how to fix it. I was able to go about 25 until I got to a boat ramp. Pulled in there, loosened the straps and moved the load forward about 12-18 inches. (Retightened) Presto, no more wiggle, even at highway speed.

A hearty and sincere thanks to whomever (probably many of you) pointed out the symptoms of too little tongue weight.

The other thing to remember is apply the trailer brakes to slow down.
