I agree with you to a point, but to blame it all on poverty and/or lack of privilege is taking the easy way out. Yes, I'm sure some of it is not being able to afford to do it right, some of it just a "git 'er done" approach, and some is just cluelessness.
Curiously, where were you able to rent a U Haul van anytime in the last 40-odd years for $20?

I dunno, it certainly stems from poverty and the absence of time/resources, but it's also a display of stupidity. You are risking all that "precious" cargo by strapping it onto your vehicle in such a ludicrous way.... it could all fall off at speed and you lose it all. But obviously some form of desperation is what drives folks to risk it.

The part that bothers me is that you know these overloaded folks drive slow as crap, blocking up the road, and leaving hazards behind. Not to mention hurting their vehicles in the process. Just leave the couch behind, dude.

I'm not a biker, so maybe I'm missing something. But assuming they're PVC fence posts, which weigh about as much as my cell phone, what's the problem with this? The overhang fore and aft look to be well under 2 feet, it's not creating much added wind resistance, it's near-zero weight... far less than the typical gear bag mounted atop the rear fender.

My lovely wife and I used to vacation in SF every couple of years in the 70s -80s until we just could not enjoy it anymore.
Ca is a beautiful state and there are a lot of nice folks there, but it has been invaded by, ..........

A lot of what made California attractive has been buried under what is now, far too many people.

California is a great state, easily the best weather in the lower 48, and with amazing landscape to boot. If you could only get rid of most of the Californians, all of the illegals, and nearly all of their government, it'd be a great place to live.
