Life on the farm

I was just thinking...back then, 1800s, I bet a man or woman could outwork 10 today. Probably the average 1800s woman could beat the average man of today. I've seen my 5ft tall grandmother dig up tree stumps by hand using a small pick, hoe, shovel.
Society as a whole has gotten weak and soft!

It would still take a lot of power/stuff to right them. Any pictures? Jon
can not find one, and just searched the book and can not find where I read about using block and tackle. Might have read it on one of the train sites.

this was taking up the rails in 1932. I played HS basketball in that school, and used to play little league baseball next to it. That school building was torn down last year.

This was the last station on the west end of our county. The house and barn/silo in the background are still there, and the state road now follows the RR path.

I had a train derail behind my old house one day. One locomotive completely left the tracks and ended up in a swamp. The other three were "close" to the tracks but derailed. The railroad brought in the mother of all cranes on rail cars (plural) to hitch and lift the swamp monster out. What a sight to see. What an idiot not to have a camera ready at the time. Picked that engine up like it was a child's toy.

Engine 4 and Engine 5. The Railroad ran many excursions, for things like holidays, church meetings, GAR reunions, Fairs, Carnivals and Circus's. They would run excursions to Bellaire where they would meet a steamer to got to Wheeling or Pittsburgh. Masonic events were also popular, apparently this train has a mason symbol on it, according to local OR&W fans.

Here's a sad event, on Oct 11-13 there was a GAR reunion in Woodsfield, and the Railroad offered excursion rates. On 10/12/1899 Isaac Brown who lives near Coates (below our farm), was returning from the reunion was struck by WB train near the tunnel (next to our farm), thrown from track and killed. Here was a Civil War veteran, killed by the train after celebrating their reunion.

Below picture is a group of GAR veterans taken in front of the county courthouse, this picture taken after 1905, when the existing Courthouse was built. I'll do another post regarding the county courthouse. When I worked for the county, that's where I collected my paycheck. lol
