A while ago my grandson said "Grandpa, I don't have any wooden blocks to play with at home". SO, here's my fix for that.

First, I found an old 4x4 by the sawmill and cut off some pieces, then squaring them up,

That made 16 blocks and that didn't seem like enough, so I sawed them in half and sanded them,

Next it was time to scrounge up some boards lying around the shop, cut them to size to make a box to hold the blocks, here I have it mocked up,

and of course, he will need some handholds to carry this box full of wood blocks, so I cut some in the end pieces,

All that's left to do on it now, is some final sanding and put some finish on it!

I think he's going to like his new blocks!

Does anyone start a fire in their fireplace with a split of pine added in, using it like a chunk of fatwood?

I've never burned pine in an inside fire, but was just wondering if it might help get a fire going quickly without introducing creosote concerns.

I use white pine and/or balsam fir for all my kindling in both the stove and fire place. Use the cut-offs from softwood landing and put them through the splitter. Some here laugh and think it is silly to do up kindling but it's easy to do and it is easy for the wife or I to get a fire going. Some times of the year we light two fires in one day and I fill a floor to ceiling kindling rack every fall. It is good and dry and has never caused any problems.

West coast here. I burn some pine, it's okay. Yes, low on the BTU. But it's fast and hot. Mostly use it for kindling but I can get it for basically free. 90% of my firewood is oak. Like the post above says, any kind of wet firewood will result in more build up. The key is cleaning your flue/stove pipe every year in the off season. Well seasoned or not, I clean out thoroughly sometime before the first fall burns.

Best thing l ever use is the Diamond Fire Sticks.
Starts a fire 97% of the time.
Used to be 8 bucks a box and now they’re $12
I use about a box and a half from Oct thru April.

thanks.. lol yeah there’s always a risk… the wife wanted a post to tie the horse. I like late summer because there is very little to no mosquitos. Early summer you simply can’t go.

90% of my wood harvesting happens in February and March. No yellow jackets, no poison ivy, no spiders, no snakes!

Sometimes you can't choose the time, I remember spending most of summer 2019 in the woods, after a tornado ripped thru our area in May. But most years, I try to put that work off until at least after Thanksgiving.
