I have a background as the Emergency Management Coordinator for 2 cities and 1 hospital. FEMA employees are not front-line first responders. FEMA is composed of 6,000 administrative personnel that coordinate the federal response to disasters. The local city and county Emergency Management agencies are the front-line responders. If they need assistance, they declare a disaster and let the state know what specific needs they have, such as needing state police or additional ambulances. If the state cannot supply what is needed, then the state declares a disaster, requests a federal disaster declaration, and if granted, makes their needs known to FEMA.

FEMA does not come in and take over, they work within the chain of command for local and state response. FEMA coordinates the assistance from government agencies such as the military and Small Business Administration, non-government agencies (NGOs), and private contractors. FEMA resources are not immediate response, usually several days to a week out. FEMA does directly manage reimbursement to local, state, and federal agencies for disaster response and long-term recovery efforts. That is the budget that has been syphoned off. It is not unusual for Congress to have to approve supplement funds apart from the annual FEMA funding for a specific disaster.

Thats what I try to do. 2 years ago, it was our turn. Floods 24’ above normal water level of our local river. Everyone in my little town lost something, luckily few or no deaths.

I have this feeling different parts of the country would have gotten faster responses. You’d think by 6-7 days later, we still wouldn’t be hearing people from the area suffering in these numbers.

What is really upsetting is the length of time these people have been suffering and the tasteless “Appalachia” jokes. Pathetic.

It does show how reliant we have become on the machine for our daily needs. No gas, electricity or cellphones should not be the end of us, yet few seem to know what else to do.
We went to the local grocery store last night, the frozen goods shelves were bare. Guess everyone stocked up for the strike. Hope their freezers don’t poop out.

Some of our family has now escaped Asheville, they have no clue how or where their lives will continue. They are very thankful that’s all they have to worry about now.

Biden and Harris pulled nearly one billion out of FEMA funds to fly in and take care of illegals. Actually I read $971,000,000. FEMA has no money to do anything. Also when the earthquake hit Haiti a couple years ago the 82nd Airborne was there within 48 hours. They have yet to be released to help in NC and soldiers with family there have been denied leave to go search for them.

The very agency that provides disaster relief to these poor people?
