But... it's aluminum foil, not tinfoil. That's why "tinfoil" hats don't work any more.

When aluminum was first refined, it was deemed more valuable than silver, if not gold.

As I recall, the final of some tall building was a small pyramid of formed alu.

We have it down now though...

To the OP’s initial title question…. It already is.

I dont really worry about it becoming Terminator, and there isn't a way back, it's here, and it's a matter of not being left behind, so use it.

As I pointed out, I heard ontime; "Every town had a last guy using a horse and buggy", and i don't want to be that guy.
I can see that viewpoint for a young person that is still trying to compete in a career. It is always important to stay current on new tools that can improve one's job performance. As a retired guy, I'm not concerned about being the last guy in town that doesn't use AI.

A case in point, my father passed away in 2014, and he never touched a computer in his life. It didn't seem to bother him one bit, and I don't think he missed out on anything.

While it is off topic, I have the same thought on AI as conspiracy theories, misinformation/disinformation, political strategies etc. I want to know the truth, I also don't want to spend what I have left in life worrying, tracking down the truth, figuring out the who/what/when/where/why of everything. Even if I knew who will be running for president in the next election, I could not possible know ALL the information needed to know who is the BEST candidate. I will rely on some short term research and move forward. AI is already playing a part in just that one example. And only in a bad way.
I just want to enjoy life. I don't think I'd want to be around in this world in say 40 years, maybe even 30.

So right now I asked Copilot to summarize a word file I am working on.
I am in the document and hit the copilot button.
Then asked it to explain this document in three sentences.

The answer:
I understand that you would like a summary of your document.
However, I cannot directly access or read the content of your document
.

Yeah, not a good start.

I work with about 4 different AI programs, some work really well, if you put in the work to get a proper outline (via Prompts). Otherwise it can make a mess of things.

When I copy the text in, it just summarizes it with the original text intact.
So know what you want to get out is key.

So far the news stories generated by AI leave tell tales.

Ex. The AI in an LA riot story remarked that the riot in the Capital was peaceful.
Since LA is not the Capital of California, it was easy to see this was an AI aggregate of a story.
So this crap is out there full tilt and giving people it's version of the news.

The three laws of robotics are looking like a good idea now Isaac.

Not sure how you can avoid AI/computers in todays world. Most cell phones are mini computers and perform AI functions numerous times a day for you (that dang spell check). Can't get SS started without logging in to their site. Wife who is technically challenged and STUBBORN has been struggling with that aspect all week.

I long for the day I can turn off my phone and go back to 1970's... Someone wants me they better be coming up on the porch.

I would argue that probably the biggest danger of AI is how it is currently set up to be the final death knell for privacy. We utterly failed to step up and protect privacy during the social media and digital ad era of the last 15 years or so. AI is going to take all those privacy issues and put them on steroids. (My day job is a consumer privacy advocate, tractors and working in the forest is just way more fun).

Right now the number one stated use people cite for generative AI is companionship/therapy. That means they are offering up all their most intimate, personal selves to AI because they find it helpful. I'm not judging whether it is helpful or not, as I know people can feel lonely or simply enjoy chatting with something that is low pressure. But when you think of all that personal information going to big companies with terrible track records on privacy, it's really scary. Couple that with stated goals companies have to collect everything about you -- your emails, calendar, travel preferences, likes, dislikes, financial data, emotional states, health data -- to offer up helpful AI agents to make your life easier, our privacy is doomed. And that really worries me because I think humans are better off when they have access to privacy rights.

There are things we can (and need to) do to change this and make our personal information work for us, rather than for the companies so that AI actually can help us in the future. The problem is, that would take real work with policymakers and people like us demanding better. And right now, there is too much else going on to focus on this. Which is a shame, because I truly believe the loss of our privacy now and accelerating into the future will be one of the biggest issues we humans face in the next few decades.
