I tried Gin when I was 16 and thought it tasted awful. An out of state visitor likes martinis so I bought some Gin several years ago. I tried it again and still don't like it....and green olives are awful too.

They both went into the trash after visitor went home.

I have always wanted to try the tonic syrup and mix my own tonic water from our soda stream. I think you could get the ratio just right to suit your taste. The cheap stuff is full of high fructose corn syrup.

Huh, I thought they just boiled down pine trees to get that flavor :giggle:
Juniper! Which is some kind of conifer I think. So pretty much boiled down pine tree. Which is the main thing you get with Gilby's and Gordon's. If you don't like it you can always clean the floors with it.

To be honest I don't like gin by itself. I didn't like Martinis when I was younger but came to find out that was probably because of the Vermouth, which was usually old and stale. I like a Martini with a good fresh vermouth if it isn't crazy dry. I like the traditional mix of 2 parts gin and one part vermouth. I prefer it shaken too because that waters it down a little.

But agree, straight up gin isn't all that great to me.

Martinis are popular with my advanced age friends but they are very particular with all in friends including the onion stuffed olive!

One has an open bar at 5 each night and friends, mostly retired military drop by.

Maybe popular because it was invented here?

One of my old man, 'get off my lawn' items is the modern habit of calling anything served in a martini glass a "martini". Back in the day, if you swapped the olive for a cocktail onion, it was a Gibson. If you put it in a rocks glass, it was still a Gibson. 🤦‍♂️

Never a partaker… always the designated driver my role.

If the drink has a olive speared by a toothpick and inside the olive is filled with onion it’s a Gibson?

I remember lots of Early Times on the rocks with 7up…

Then there were also the Manhattens…

I first bartended at age 8 at my uncles wedding… everyone said I poured a good drink… a couple of ice cubes and half Early Times bourbon and half 7up…

Once upon a time, I was a Tanqueray guy. Wife bought me a bottle of "10" for our 10th Anny.

I started out with Bombay Sapphire, then when I found 10 that became my go-to.

Occasionally I would pick up a bottle of Cold River; it's local, so I don't know where it is available, but any of you folks that still drink ought to give it a shot. Makes for an excellent G&T.

I wouldn't say I drink, but I don't 'not drink'. It can aggravate the gout, so it's occasional only. My wife has 1 or 2 almost nightly. She prefers bourbon (Manhattans).

I'm not sure, but if it was common practice, there was a name. Variants would get an adjective like Dirty Martini.

Now they make drinks with Vodka or Gin, no vermouth and no olive. "It's a chocolate martini". No it's not. It's chocolate milk with vodka.
