Only time my tractor will ever go to the dealer is if it's in warranty and a big repair. Otherwise, it isn't going...

The nearest dealer in any direction is 2-hours away, no matter which direction you take out of town. But, we do have a good independent mechanic who will work on anything you bring him. And, if you're a regular customer, he'll come fix what he has worked on before.

I happen to like my dealer. It’s about 35-40 minutes away. I can load my L3540 tractor on the trailer, saving about $150 in delivery and pick up charges. And they’ve always taken good care of me! I blew a front left axle seal , turns out it cracked the bearing race and the plate that it goes in so they had to replace all of that.(yes they showed me the broken pieces) I had them do the valve job on it as long as it was there $1300, did a great job to explain everything they did .I like my dealer.

I happen to like my dealer. It’s about 35-40 minutes away. I can load my L3540 tractor on the trailer, saving about $150 in delivery and pick up charges. And they’ve always taken good care of me! I blew a front left axle seal , turns out it cracked the bearing race and the plate that it goes in so they had to replace all of that.(yes they showed me the broken pieces) I had them do the valve job on it as long as it was there $1300, did a great job to explain everything they did .I like my dealer.
the valve job? What's the relationship between that and a leaking axle seal? Or was it a valve adjustment?

We regularly hear people say "take it to your dealer", or "it's under warranty, so call the dealer". To actually do any of that, what's involved for you? For me, it's a lot of work, a lot of $$, and a lot of time, so really it's the step of last resort. Here are some examples:

My Kubota dealer is 45min to an hr away. I could trailer my tractor or small excavator there, but that will consume roughly 6 hrs to get the trailer ready, load up, drive an hr (it will take the full hour pulling a heavy load), unload, drive home, and unhook and stow the trailer, then do it all again to pick the machine up once it's fixed. My larger excavator would have to be trucked, so I'd guess $500 each way, or $1000 total, and I can't get a tractor trailer in to my place, so I'd have to track the machine out to a location to meet the truck, which of course means the machine needs to work enough to move it around. And I'd still have to make at least one round trip to the dealer to go over the problem and make sure they know what's needed. So that's 3 hrs.

Then there is the actual dealer work. Most are very backed up, so a good chance your machine will sit for a week, if not multiple weeks before it's even looked at. Then any repairs will take at least another week because they will need parts and nobody seems to stock anything other than maintenance and common wear parts. And if their first "guess" at what to replace doesn't work, then you can stay another week while the guess again, and maybe again and again. And of course there is the possibility that the dealer won't be able to reproduce or actually fix the problem, and that you get the machine home and the problem still exists.

Mobile service is an option, but very expensive with billable travel and work time. But it is an option for spending $$ rather than spending your own time. But scheduling and time to repair isn't any better, and possibly worse.

The bottom line is that you will be out 3-6 hrs of personal work time, and up to $1000 in trucking, plus loss of use for weeks to months.

It's mostly the same for my Deere. The dealer is only about 20 minutes away which is a plus, but the tractor would have to be trucked. And from what I can tell they have zero direct experience with 6 series tractors, and only limited experience with 5 series.

All this is probably the biggest reason why I always end up doing work on the machines myself. It takes less of my personal time, and gets things running again faster.
I have pondered this but would be disaster especially if the 410j wouldn't run. Even if I could get a lowboy to come here the tractor and trailer couldn't turn around due to thick forest and steep rough logging trails. If the backhoe was out and/or the loader down, oht oh. Even getting the thing to freewheel.... I'm sure there are bypass options for all these problems. It would be darned expensive just to get it out of here and back.

A few years back my F350 was non-drivable due to a wood rat and to get a rig hauler to come get it and deliver for repairs in town was $550.

Having said the above I wouldn't want to live any place else.

Last year my f350 was stone cold dead due to computer failure. Had a towtruck hauler pull it out and take it to repair facility. My auto insurance company paid me back 100% of tow fee.

For me, "take it to the dealer" means trying to figure out the problem, likely post on here for ideas, finally, call them and ask them what it could be; and double, triple, checking everything. Warranty is still in place, but things like damage, fuel, ect; your going to load up, haul 50 minutes, get a hefty bill, and then have to go get it, and it could be a fair bit of time, its not like they are twiddling their thumbs waiting on your repair. So, this idea that a warranty means everything is just taken care of is false.

With that, im glad I do have a warranty for now, but I dont put a ton of faith in it.

Just dropped my truck off at the dealer this morning. Fuel pressure low indicator, likely a bad sensor. I know what the part is, where it is, and even how to swap it out. But the hours and contortions required debug and then replace the part just aren't in the cards for me right now, hours of available daylight are just too short for me the next week or two. Sometimes it's easier to just take one thing off your plate and off your mind, as much as I prefer doing all my own maintenance.
