I have the one gallon swingspout oil container we used. We let the cans drain into it and if enough collected use it for tractor, mower, etc.
Also to fill oil squirt dispensers.

Well, ya see, waaaaaaay back then, coffee came in metal cans too, and those cans had plastic lids. It just so happened that the "half-pound" sized plastic coffee can lids were a perfect fit for oil cans.

lol... that makes sense! Most of my older nails are still sorted into dad's huge collection of metal coffee cans, and I remember going to the lumber yard to buy nails by the pound, out of the bulk bins. All back before they started boxing nails at Lowes Depot.

How on earth did people manage to keep their oil clean and sealed, in those stupid cans?

I must have anywhere from 8 - 20 partially-used bottles or jugs of oil on the shelf, at any time. I rotate my stock and use up a partial can before opening any new of the same, but with many machines taking different weights and types, it's innevitable. Thank goodness they all have resealable tops, to stay clean and relatively moisture-free.

Too long ago to remember where I got them...but there were plastic lids that snapped on over the top of the oil can and I had a bunch of them.

The only thing I've ever used the pointy end on was juice cans. Beverages had pop-tops or bottle tops by the time I came around.

Found these old beer cans at a long-abandoned mining camp in the Nevada mountains. You can see the miners used the "pointy" end of the "church key" to get to the beer! All the "Lucky Lager" beer cans were date stamped - note the date on this one:

As we age, we can't see as well in lower light conditions. I buy my oil in 2 1/2 gal bottles, then transfer them to a gallon bottle to put them in the vehicle. In the last couple of years, I found that I can't see how much oil is in the 1 gallon bottle through the semi-clear band on the back.

I just washed a 1 gallon vinegar bottle, which are strong. I'm going to measure and mark it with quarts and maybe pints.

I was pleased when Shell started offering their Rotella diesel motor oil in 3 gallon bulk containers as that's exactly how much it takes to change the oil in my Kubota and both of my pickups. I set the container on top of a step ladder, crack open the valve on the container and let the oil flow down into a funnel/hose into the engine. Quick, easy, no mess, and only a collapsible bladder to get rid of when done.

As a kid in the Bronx, we used to jump those! You take a running start put your hands on the top of the meter and go for it!!!

I remember my father opening beer cans that way when I was a kid. A quick Google search shows that pull tab beer cans didn't come along until the early 1960s.
Steel cans, had to have a strong grip to crush one back in those days!
