John Deere Model 670
I am the proud owner of a John Deere Model 670 and I have decided that I want to change the transmission/hydraulic oil. Yesterday after gathering together a pail for the waste oil, wrenches, paper towels, four gallon containers of new oil, I crawled under the tractor and I COULDN'T FIND THE DRAIN PLUG. Really!! I have looked at the picture in the operator's manual until I'm blue in the face and it shows the drain plug nestled in the crotch of a "Y" formed by the bracket that holds the drawbar. Yes indeed, I have such a bracket, but THERE'S NO DRAIN PLUG THERE!! Only a square plate held in place with four bolts. There is a screen under a cast plate on the right side of the transmission which will need to be cleaned and I suppose that I could drain the oil there; however, this screen is not at the lowest point in the transmission and I won't be able to drain out all of the old oil. By the way, my tractor is "bare nakid" without front wheel drive, midmount PTO, power steering, filter cannister for the transmission/hydraulic oil, etc. I have the IT Shop Manual and that isn't helpful either. My operator's manual is for both the Model 670 and the Model 770 and that might be contributing to the confusion. Anyway, I'd be grateful for any help; I feel kind of stupid not being able to locate something so basic.

Have you looked under that square plate? Could be some sort of protection. For the drain plug?

Hate to say it, but since that was posted in 2001 i assume that either a) he found out how to drain it or b) the entire tractor has shut down due to lack of an oil change LOL

PART #10 is the plug and Part#7 is the hydraulic screen

And PART#17 are also drain plugs (2)

Thought about it but I am a wuss. Wanted to see what I could find out first before messing up or making an unnecessary mess. Looks like there are multiple drains from the feedback I am getting. Thanks Jmer817

DFB, Thanks. Really didn't expect an answer due to old question. My first time on a forum so am a bit green on how things work. Your diagrams represent what I have. Looks like the hydraulics, rear drive train and transmission are all connected and fed by hydraulic fluid. Really appreciate the input. Thanks.

Brian, I agree. It was a shot in the dark. I was stuck on a Saturday afternoon with no dealers available. Just didn't make sense as manual does not reflect what I have.

You can find all the diagrams plus parts # at JD PARTS. Search your tractor model. I find looking in the sectional index most useful.

On closer inspection it looks like part# 20 is also a drain plug for the trans housing.
