I have a 1979 log splitter with a Briggs and Stratton 7 HP engine on it.
New spark plug, new points and condenser, new coil, fresh flushed gas tank, new fuel line, brand new carburetor, fresh oil.
Was running nicely for a while and then started just stalling with no load, basically just shutting down.
I have a sneaky feeling it has something to do with the governor.
it stalls, you then choke it, one pull and it fires right up, then put in in the run mode and it runs nicely.
You split a couple of logs and it starts just shutting off.
I did play with the governor and feel that it the culprit but do not know !
Does anyone have any suggestions ?
Thank you in advance for the reply.

Only a thought from experience...

Does it make a difference if the gas cap is loose?

If the vent is plugged/restricted it will run fine and then slow and quit.

Same thought I had, I built a splitter a few years back, bought a new Princess Auto 13H engine for it. Started right up and worked great for 5 minutes and then stumble and quit. I was looking for problems with the low oil shutdown, ignition system anything I could think of. It would start right up after a couple of minutes and do the same thing all over again, ended up the cap wasn't vented....Mike

Sounds like youre running out of fuel. Gas cap suggestion fits. If thats not it you may have an obstruction at the tank valve or float needle ... or even a little water in the gas. A drop can accumulate just below the main jet and grow til it obstructs pickup. Choking sucks it thru. Repeat.

I had similar problems. Ended up that the gas tank was cracked and it got rain water in the fuel. Hopefully you don't have that problem.

I got this PM from Bondo1...

"I loosened the cap and ran it, to my disbelief it ran and ran and ran.

Took the cap off blew all the tiny holes out with carb cleaner and it seems to be running as it should.

Split a couple of logs with no problems. I will put it to the test tomorrow again !

The gas cap was the culprit, I took it apart and for sure the tiny holes in were obstructed !
The stalling problem was resolved by cleaning it. After I cleaned the cap it ran without stalling !!!
I KNOW HAVE ANOTHER ISSUE , I am able to split well until the motor sees load on a hard log or y type log. They are hard to split anyway, so you have to jog it thru the log and then you seem to be ok.
So my new problem is the machine stalls too easily, I have played with the carb adjustments, increased idle, and it is doing better but I feel that it is still too sensitive !!!! I feel that it is a governor issue.
How can I make the machine plow through the logs with out having to baby it ??
Thank everyone for the responses I sincerely appreciate it !

You could be at your limit for HP to drive the pump.

Is the pressure at max while splitting?

Two stage or single stage pump?, guessing but most you could get from 7HP would be around 3-4gpm @2KPSI± which would be quite slow . I'm guessing single stage, JJ I think is on the right track.....Mike
