Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

To get the ext-cab here (my preference, for longer box), looks like I'd have to go Pro4x. Fighting with nissan.ca site.... so can't complete a quote, but should be 4x4, $52.6k plus, CAD. Haven't compared in a while, but it's not been unusual for new vehicles to be 10k higher here (converted...

Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

Pricing online recently (def not basic truck material, sorry for drift).... I was attempting to see if anything was still kicking around for small diesels, just for grins.... not much, but did see that VW old Amarok (sp?) pu, is now a Ranger ? I definitely missed that deal being cut. So...

Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

I remember those; small turbos were scarce back then, was part of the problem. Not that the 350 low-end would have liked turbo charging, but it would have bumped the efficiency even more (the only reason I like a turbo, is for dzl). I highly doubt that ^ from GM was what the powertrain...

Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

I figure they were running something like 60mpg (at least, w. Canuck gallon). Part of that was low-weight (vs. today's safety add-ons), but still..... Rgds, D.

Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

Yep, olde modest, long-running small diesel, likely just mech-inj back far enough... not the 1000 ft# of Tq that everyone "Needs" to have today, but Those mpg's !!!!!! Buddy used to tow his son's motocross bikes to the Carolina's, for training camps. Used an old Econoline with the IDI...

Pretty much the perfect setup for that task , I can see why he kept it. Turning over vehicles that "fast"... sure he wasn't a relative of yours ? ;) Posting that VW today, had me thinking of the drop-sided Transporters, which your pic also reminded me of, again.... Rgds, D.

Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

And, of course, the VW p/u...... There are modern turboD versions of all of these (that mostly we can't get).... but for just a basic run-around personal vehicle (vs. hauler), I could still drive one. Patrick Bedard (wrote for C&D for a long-time, qualified (then crashed IIRC) @ Indy) wrote a...

Just can't get a good basic truck, like the old days!

There was an OE (not homemade) camper on that chassis, down the road from me for a # of years. Didn't confirm the engine in it, but unlikely it was a 'yoda V6. Popular truck, in other applications, but for "dually" loads, it needed a Tdiesel..... likely common elsewhere. Rgds, D.

    Your last generator Maintenance Run

d - discussion today, reminds me of being @ my Uncle's shop in Atlantic Canada, as a kid. He had a big chunk of thick truck Inner Tube nailed up over the padlock on his wooden shop-door. Lots of ice in Atlantic storms, even back then, so he'd gotten tired of a frozen lock. Tube worked well...

    Your last generator Maintenance Run

Are you looking to go up to 10kw range ? If so, you might want to look @ Generac portables. I don't know their reliability well, but once FI started making it into larger portable gens, I noted it in one of their new open-frame 8Kw or so models... not Honda-quiet likely, but more in the $ range...

    Your last generator Maintenance Run

Thanks for posting that. As you'd know..... good-quality Marine-grade switches are Spendy, so not surprising as a cut-corner.... If you are keeping the GE? you have for now, perhaps a tarp under the unit may help this Fall, if not in place already.... (outdoor-stored, with cover already...

    Your last generator Maintenance Run

Let us know what the failure point was pls, on that gen of yours. TBN-minds want to know  Many of us won't put 1000s of hours on our portable gens, but some do, so the "mechanical" aspect of EFI pumps was on my mind, during first-coffee today. OK, an open-frame generator stands a good...

    Your last generator Maintenance Run

I really don't NEED another generator, but I've been looking @ the Champion inverter line now and then, in the 3k - 4k range. Good combination of price-point, features, reliability, as far as I can tell..... If/when I pull out the wallet for that ^ or similar, I'll likely select one that is...

    Your last generator Maintenance Run

That observation keeps coming up in this thread. I believe it to be true.... In my small engines, I tend to rotate thru Stabil, SeaFoam, and occasionally StarTron (different attack vector, IMO). I think there is a stability factor with 2Strk oil, but this discussion flow brought me back to...
