I grew up poor enough to not know we were poor. I learned how to work on pretty much everything out of necessity for the first 30 years of my life and only started working on things for what some would call 'fun' later in life. I'm usually pretty good at figuring things out on my own but after helping other people out with solutions to problems that I've encountered and conquered (and found satisfaction helping folks not fall into the same pitfalls) that life doesn't always have to be as hard as I've made it for myself by not asking someone with more knowledge than I can easily find if they don't already know what I'm about to be dealing with. I have no kids to pass down what I've learned and most of the younger people in the family don't share the same interests in learning how to do it for yourself so you can then teach it to the next generation. Or the short version is: I'm old, prone to cursing at inanimate objects but given a hammer, some oil, some wire and an assortment of tools I can usually make it run well enough.
