    The day the music died.

He was one of a kind. Along with some of his music , I also enjoyed his reality show, especially when he'd call for his wife - "Sherrinnnnn". One thing that sticks in my mind is him grumbling about being the prince of darkness while picking up a mess left by one of Sharon's little dogs

Is a John Deere really worth 24% more that a Kubota

I always believed that in the compact and sub-compact class Kubota were selling at a good size premium to JD and a huge one to other brands....guess I was wrong, maybe they are a bargain.

TC33DA hydraulic leak - how expensive will this be?

Mine is also 20 years old although not a NH, like yours it had been seeping hydraulic fluid for a while. Turns out it was a slightly cracked hose for the power steering. The mechanic who serviced it told me it took longer cleaning up the machine to locate the leak than to actually fix it.

There are little beech sprouts all over the place, hopeful some will make it disease free, some ash sprouts as well but not as much. Maybe it will be like with elm, they do grow and some reach around 20 cm diam. , just enough maturity to reseed before they die in a matter of a year or two.

As soon as the Mrs steps out the little monkey jumps on the kitchen counter.....I am not the one who enacted those rules so I am not enforcing them

Some healthy looking beech still here...most scab covered ones were removed the last 10 years, maybe 20% left of what it was 2 decades ago. I even have a few isolated good sized ash tree but 99% are gone. Butternut hickory were wiped out in the past 10-20 years though.

blue beech is a misnomer , it is actually in the birch family. I guess the name comes from its smooth greyish bark similar to a beech tree but with very distinctive ridges . it is a very potent firewood but judging from the ones on my land it never excedes 6-8 inches diameter (15-20 cm)

beside black birch we do have those other species around here--I am 50km north of the border--but they are few and far between save for hophornbeam which is common but like you said is only a small understory tree just like blue beech (carpus caroliana) another widespread small high BTU tree...

maybe you are confusing rock/sugar maple (acer saccharum) with red maple (acer rubrum) because ''decent" firewood doesnt do it justice. As firewood I would pick it over any other specie.

I’m thinking it’s finally time for a change

They showed up 50 years ago and by the mid 1980s they were wide spread , at least up here same as with japan made cars

I am with you on cherry as a firewood , it is fair at best, even the abundant lowly soft maple is much better in every way.
