Good Morning y'all! Sitting at my desk in the city, in a high rise... thinking about my barn, and my goats! ... well at least I've got my coffee. Scripture for today you ask..? well sure!! "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried...

    farming miles from home?

Not having much land myself on my own property (just over once acre) I have been propositioned with raising some livestock on 3 acres (eventually 13-20 acres if it works out). Which I believe I'm going to grab by the horns and go for it. The only cost inefficiency is that it's 15 miles north of...

Should I add Chickens this summer?

So we've got our two dairy goats bred, and will hopefully have kids (for the first time) in late spring. Also we want to have another garden this next year. I'm wondering if adding Egg laying hens to my place (maybe five or six) might be too much in the same year. Dealing with new baby goats...

Never before, green horn thinking about growing Alfalfa hay small scale.

So... Here is my (small) thought. Find a small piece of land (1-2 acres) that's in decent condition for hay. Have an agreement with the land owner. Rent/borrow a tractor and plow said field at the right time. (Might be looking at spring planting at this late point. or late summer next year)...

    Dairy Goat de-wormers?

I've been reading about Apple Cider Vinegar in an article in the "Stockman Grass Farmer" magazine. Any experience with using only ACV in with thier water? Of course with good clean forage, and paddock rotation, and the basic best practices that is. Thanks y'all!

    One foot off the line...

So...My neighbor has decided out of all of the land he has, he is building a (third) playhouse for his one child. This one however, is going to be the most elaborate one yet. over six feet high, and a coupl eof porches off of two sides... AND it's set to be built only 12 stinking inches off of...

    Barn loft construction

So I've decided to use 4x6 posts, but not sure if I should just burry them, or if I should use concrete piers in the ground to attach the posts to, as was suggested to me before. Any thoughts/suggestions. I'm thinking the concrete piers would be best. Even though I'm not planning on keeping a...

    TECH... another four letter word...

... I really don't like technology anymore. Is anyone with me? (yes I'm aware that it's internet technology that is the vehicle for my complainaing about technology.) I don't like technology anymore becasue technology is my job and has been for the last seven years. blah! How does one get back...

Keeping water from freezing for small scale livestock

I've been all over the web looking at "solar powered" watering systems. But I wanted to get some of your thoughts. When I get the goats (God willing) I'm leaning towards just updating with a new electric line. Right now all I have... is the line that runs from the house to the light post and...

    Small-scale (homestead) Livestock ins?

I had a friend (neighbor) mention to me that I should really get my dairy goats (when I get them) insured. Since I live on a small 1 acre, but mainly because we live right on a state route. And (he said) " if they got out, and maybe caused an accident on the road, you would be liable." Makes...

Building a hay loft inside the pole barn

Should I use 4x4's or 6x6 posts when I go to build my hay loft? I'm planning on building a little hay loft in my 30x40 pole barn. It will be just on one side of the structure, due to the fact that both of the big doors are on the same side (for easy pull through of course). I'll be attaching...

    Black Locust fence posts

Howdy everyone, I'm trying to figure out with the Black Locust tree's I'm planning on cutting down for fence posts... when I put them in the ground, should I leave the bark on them, or strip the bark off before setting them? By the way the trees are about 6-10 inches in diameter if that matters.
