I am just going to start over. At this point I'm guessing I've been spoiled on flatish ground and have something somewhere that is binding, sticking or otherwise misbehaving. After I go through the entire 3 point I hope to find something dumb.

I think you are to something. I need to have someone look while I pull the mower (with the pto disengaged of course) and make sure something isn't catching or binding.

Thanks for the idea, but that is the problem. The other ball joint is tucked up in the tunnel in a challenging spot. The manual calls for splitting and I don't see a way around it. Even if I could reach it with a drill extension there is no way to attach the new rod without unbolting the ball...
As the subject says the forward control rod broke right where it threads into the ball joint. I can just touch the bolt but I don't see any way to replace the rod without splitting the tractor as stated in the manual. Does anyone know of a way to replace the rod without splitting the tractor...
