    Brush Grubber

I saw a great video on YouTube of a guy pulling out stumps with a foundry hook. I bought a couple on Ebay but haven't tried it. He had a heavy chain and was pulling with a small cat (D4 or D2). Here is what I bought on Ebay

OEM Tractor Oil vs Shell, Valvoline, Amsoil, etc.

The Magnuson Moss Warranty act of 1975 prohibits warranties from requiring dealer service or OEM oil changes etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson%E2%80%93Moss_Warranty_Act https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/statutes/magnuson-moss-warranty-federal-trade-commission-improvements-act...

    Another Battery!

That is amazing for any battery. However I've somewhat grudgingly decided that the best value in batteries is to go to Walmart and buy the one with the longest warranty for that battery group (size). They're still not great on lifetime but better than similarly priced batteries with shorter...

Bulldozer comes off of trailer, kills 2

Correct, this type of machine rides on a detachable gooseneck "double drop lowboy" loaded and rigged by a professional heavy equipment mover.

Bulldozer comes off of trailer, kills 2

This tragedy happened near me so I'm familiar with the road and victim's the company though not the people personally. There are three routes into the valley which is a popular recreation area. None of the routes are easy with trucks, trailer, RVs, etc. This disaster of incompetence and...

What is the oddest machine you have worked on or operated

I've worked on/operated a number of odd machines included a plutonium powered Mars rover but the most amazing for its time and terrifying to operated was the John Deere 55H sidehill combine. On a steep sidehill one of the big front wheels would be up as high as the operator platform, the other...

Removing small dead trees - best way to pull

Watch this video by tractor rebuild guru Squatch253. He uses a chain with a foundry hook to rip a couple of big roots and then the stump is easy. I found a couple of heavy hooks on eBay. And use the drawbar. It is much harder to flip pulling well below the axle.

Tractor Sizing  modern replacement for 60 year old D4 & D2 Cat

I am operating about 160 acres of dryland wheat in SE Idaho. This was my great-grandfather's land adjacent to his 1900 homestead. In 1955 he bought a Cat 5U series D2, and his neighbor (who we eventually bought out) had a 1952 7U series D4. In the early 70s we bought a Cat D4D SA. Much of the...

Ford 4600 bush hog on slope

I found one. I googled "used tractor parts ford" and emailed a request to about a dozen salvage yards. I got a hit from BrokenTractor.com in Baton Rouge, LA. They offered this ROPS/FOPS canopy for $350, plus $190 shipping to the industrial area of Salt Lake City where I work. Shipping to the...

Ford 4600 bush hog on slope

I'm looking for a ROPS/FOPS canopy for our Ford 4600. My dad picked this tractor up a few years ago for mowing and general utility and maintenance work around the farm which is all in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). I think it had been used for mucking out a dairy barn before he bought...

New Member, SE Idaho mountain land dry farm

I spent summers as a teen working on the family farming operations that date back to my great grandfather's 1900 homestead. Sometime while I was out of the region in engineering grad school or getting established with a career and family most of the land went into the Conservation Reserve...
