My dad in San Diego had rocks and sand in a really nice, low water needs setup with rain barrels off the roof down spouts to collect water from any rain. Cactus and low water need plants rounded out the setup.

That's a weeping pine tree, it's just massive and have to work at keeping it trimmed. We also have wisteria and a new mystery vine (the mystery vine will "disappear" this winter).
