Thanks for the replies rScotty and oldnslo...
I'm going to call the service department at the dealership rather than rely on the parts guy's opinion... Might try to call the JD tech line.
Of course, this is for a 37 year old tractor that isn't really being supported by JD anymore.
They quote...
I recently had to split my JD 1050 tractor to replace some seals in the transmission & PTO shafts.
Although I ended up not replacing my clutch (it measured out okay)... I did buy the special tool (JDG-52) to adjust the clutch fingers for $99 (ouch)!
I've seen a few posts asking for the...
I recently had to split my John Deere 1050 into three pieces to replace two seals in the clutch input shafts. What a job!
When I went to the John Deere dealership to buy new hydraulic fluid, I was about to pick up regular Hy-Gard but the man behind the counter said, "Wait! You need to use Low...
Hey Timberhole, I cleaned up one of the sleeves today and see some pitting down around where the o-rings would sit. Question is whether the pitting is bad enough not to reuse the sleeve. I guess it could come down to a choice as I the sleeve bore doesn't look to bad and measurements indicate it...
Thanks Timberhole for finding out that information from your machine shop. I ended up buying new aftermarket head from Hoye Tractor Parts with new valves and valve parts. I hope I made the right decision. There was a core charge to send the original head back but I may keep the original head...
Today I was able to measure the bearing-to-journal oil clearance with plastigage for all three rod bearings. They all measured within 0.003 in which is within the JD 1050 spec for new parts (0.0016 to 0.0035 in). The wear tolerance is 0.005 in. Bearings looked good with minimal scuffing.
I...
Quick update... I was able to work on the tractor today since it was 58F here in Virginia. It was 11F when I woke up this morning!
Anyway, I pulled the oil pan and did a pressure test on the coolant system. It was pretty obvious that coolant was leaking from either a crack in something or the...
Just wanted to check in in case anyone is facing the same problems with their tractor and is following this thread.
I haven't been able to do much work on the tractor due to the cold weather in Virginia and the holidays.
Tonight, I went down to look things over and stuck my finger in the...
Hello all,
I have a John Deere 1050 which I am trying to diagnose coolant loss. Sorry for the long post.
After operating at temperature and letting the tractor cool down, the coolant overflow bottle loses about 2" worth of coolant every time. In other words, it's about 2" lower than before...
Hey Aaron Z, thanks for the reply. I'll see if an insulated spade fits. Here's another picture of the connector plugged in... I'll try to get a picture of the connector on the starter side tomorrow.
Can anyone identify the electrical connector in these pictures and recommend a source to purchase the connector from? I'm redoing the electrical wiring on my John Deere 1050 and this connector goes into the starter motor. It is in okay shape but I'd prefer to replace it with new with the new...
Well, got her back together yesterday... the second picture is of the tractor running... no more huge oil leak from the front end. Hardest part was reconnecting the injection fuel pump linkage and spring. Cleaning the old baked on gasket material off of the various surfaces was also somewhat...
Hi all,
First off, this is my first post and first time working on tractors. I have worked on my Ram 2500 diesel truck.
I just bought a John Deere 1050 with a Woods LC108 loader. It starts right up with no blow-by that I can see... no pressure to speak of from the crankcase breather...
