I would like to use my Ford 1520 (23hp) with 7108 loader and 60" bucket to lift some logs from the ground into my pickup. These are roughly 8.5' long and I estimate at 1200lbs. Not sure how much weight I've lifted in the past with this, I suppose the heaviest would be a load of dirt, or item 4 with the tooth bar installed. It had no problem with that at all. So does anyone know the rating of my loader, or better yet, think it will lift these logs. Thanks for your help.

Only way to really know if your loader will lift it is try to pick one up.
The loader will either lift it or it won't.

Don't know that specific loader. Based on you tractor size, I would say it will not lift that much weight. My guess is about 800 lb lift for that size of tractor.

The 7308 loader on my 1920 is rated for 800 pounds if I recall correctly. I would put as much ballast on the back of your tractor and see if it lifts them. If it struggles then have someone back the truck under the log instead of driving the tractor to the truck. This way you don't have to lift as high and risk tipping.

Sounds like a good way to wreck something or worse yet, hurt someone. Too much weight to begin with, and way too wide when picked perpendicular to the tractor to be safe at the height required to clear the side of the truck. Unless there is a different plan of attack. If you insist on picking those logs, definitely back the truck under them.

drivadesl,

The new TC23D with new 230TL loader only has a lift capacity of 750 LBS @ Max height & 19.7" from the pins. So I would think your 1708 will only lift to this as a maximum & probably a little less.....maybe 725 LBS at same parameter values.

I would definitely try the lift with alot of ballast of course on the back of tractor.....say 400 LBS. If you are able to lift the logs dead center that only means that they will extend out 1-1/2 Ft. either end of bucket. What's so wide about that. Just be CAREFUL out there & have a second person for watching at a safe distance. Obviously, if you have used your FEL enough you will know if it is straining......much slower lift than usual or initial delay in trying lift. If that is the case, don't abuse the tractor.

What diameter are logs & are they hardwood ??

Vic

As an edit to above, the risky part would be to ensure that the log does not roll back towards the tractor when you do the lift.

Thanks for all the input. It sounds like I'm a bit under capacity to fully lift the logs, though maybe could lift one end to get the truck underneath and lift in stages. Unfortunately the logs aren't close by otherwise I would just test it out. I was looking at renting a trailer to move the tractor but I can't justify the cost, so will likely use some other means. Now if I had the TN-70 that I'm getting in a couple months, I may have just done it. Thanks again.

I would take the bucket off to save a couple hundred pounds, hang something heavy on the back, chain the log to the arms, and try to lift it -- slowly. I would not suggest driving very far with it.

How about dragging the log into position and sliding it up a ramp of some kind into the truck?

You could also cable it to a pulley and pull it in by backing away from the truck if you rig it right.

I move logs of similar size, up to 20" in diameter with a TC-30, 7308. I used bucket forks and ratchet straps to secure to log to the bucket. Then I load on to a trailer. If I can't pick it up I cut the log in half. I used this technique to collect logs for firewood for myself, my sister, and parents. The Rear tires are loaded I will have something on the rear for ballast.

We remove bucket to do this with the Brush Crusher attachment, however the attachment allows secure bite on the log. Using chains sounds like a good way to twist your loader. Ever consider cutting logs in half to reduce the lift capacity? Sounds like it would be less strain on your tractor and loader.
