I would just start cutting on the left and get rid of as much as possible. You may be able to remove everything that's on your side.

Oops. Didn't see the whole thread.

I use Pferd sharpeners. Little skill required, and it takes five minutes.
They are great! I use the Stihl equivalent. Mostly, I get done with a chain and think "that's it? Done already?".🤣 Too many years doing it by eye I guess.

All the best,

Peter

That's exactly my experience. I see people buying machines and gadgets, and I wonder why. I think the problem is that no one experienced has shown them how easy it is to sharpen a saw.

I would still be using files, but the Pferds cut the rakers as well as the chisels, and that's a big bonus.

I've been on both sides of this debate, if it really even is a debate. I hand-sharpened on the bar for many years, until I found myself trying to jam 15 cords of off-site harvesting into just a few Saturdays per year, and had to minimize down-time. It became much faster to just pack several chain loops for each saw, and quickly swap them out as needed, than to pull out the file and waste several minutes longer on hand-sharpening.

So, now I use a bench grinder for 95% of my sharpening needs. When a chain goes dull, I swap it out, which gives me a chance to clean the saw and oiler grooves, and then get right back to cutting. Chains get sharpened in my heated and air conditioned shop on a random weeknight when I have nothing going on, with an audiobook or music playing in the background.

I can still hand sharpen, just like I can still swing a splitting axe, but I've chosen to give both up for better throughput and efficiency.

Good to have both options of either using the 2 in 1 or the electric grinder. when I hit rock or fence line, the electric seems faster and more accurate at grinding back to something useable.

I carry my grinder with me along with a power inverter for that "just in case" moment. Have also had good luck with the. Dremel tool chainsaw sharper. It'll get it sharp enough to get you back going! I have loops for each saw and swap out. As was mentioned, it gives you the chance to clean the saw, bar groove, and flip over the bar. YMMV.

I can hand sharpen but find that I am not consistent enough that the chain will start to cut a curve after several sharpenings. So I continue to sharpen by hand and when it gets bad, I bring it to the nice man to grind it back in shape. But I do very little of both these days as my saws sit a lot more than they used to...

I run about ten chains down to the local Stihl dealer every year. All at once. I let him do his thing while I oggle real saws. LOL.
