Rant against insurance agencies

Buddy of mine had the same problem. Vehicle totalled for the price of a bumper which was half the cost of annual premiums being paid.

All insurance companies, especially in Ontario Canada with their legislated forced insurance monopoly, are scammers.

We had State Farm back when my youngest daughter was in college. When she came home on summer break my wife called them and asked if we should add her to our policy. Agent said sure just take her off when she goes back to college. When break was up my wife called to take her off and Sstate Farm canceled our insurance due to daughter’s driving record.

Sorry that happened to you. Most insurance covers anyone you allow to drive the vehicle. It's a strange thing. Adding someone is more about covering that person, no matter what they drive...like a friend's car. Exception is rental cars as that's a whole other scam.

We kept our kids on the insurance even when off at school. Just in case they drove something. 3/4 are still on our policy as adults. They just pay us their portion. Oldest will come off soon as he gets married next year.

Now, because they have to make up for catastrophic losses, we pay for everyone's loss now
That’s literally the definition of insurance.

Years ago when I worked for an ag dealer there was a combine that had caught fire and burned. Believing all the trash put out by insurance companies and what I had been taught about cheating on insurance, I wrote the estimate for only what had to be replaced and for the labor I felt was needed for the repair. Machine was repaired. When the insurance agent came to settle up, he said "well we have to take 10* betterment of the total". When asked what betterment was and the agent explained "well the parts you used were brand new the parts you took off had been used and were five years old."

State farm has never done us wrong until now.
A while ago I bought a 12 year old 2006 F350 with a plow for $8,000. Yours is 17 years old. You believe they’ve done you wrong by not evaluating your own truck for repair. None of them do this though. They look at the median price of a similar truck in your region, look at actuarial tables to see the regional costs of repairs, and decide to either total or repair it based on what’s less expensive for them. These older trucks are relatively cheap to buy and expensive to repair. This isn’t specific to State Farm.

I am 82 and have had State Farm since I was 21. I have never had ad problem with a claim. About 35 years ago I had the same car stolen twice within a 3 month time frame and State Farm gave notice they were going to start cancelling my policies. I talked to my agent and he suggested I send a letter to the CEO of State Farm which I did. He reversed underwriting and kept my policies in place. It proved to be a good decision for State Farm and me

It was never that way, I always paid rates based on my situation. I don't remember catastrophic losses until at least the early 2000's. That's about when insurance companies figured they couldn't recoup the losses, of say a Cali fire, a Louisiana flood, so they make all pay for it. How many times have I helped pay, involuntarily, for people who chose to live in a flood or fire zone?

Not sure how it works south of the boarder in the US, but up here in Canada we have several Ombudsman that we can contact for this type of issue. Maybe do an internet search for that term "Ombudsman" with "insurance" and possibly "motor vehicle" to see what is available in your state.
