Case IH D40 hard start

Why don't you try the basic test? Remove the signal wire from the starter. Put a short jumper wire on the spade and "jump" that to battery positive. Do that a few times. Do you get the same result as with starting (or attempting to start) with the key? If yes, then you have a starter, battery, cable, or related problem. On the other hand, if the starter engages and cranks the engine first time every time, the problem is with the incoming signal circuit.

Incoming signal issue. Guess I get to build the starter relay. Sure will save a lot of aggravation. Seems like an easy build. Anything to watch for? Thank yall for your help.

Pretty straight forward. Have done it a number of times. Plenty of instructions out there. Just stay away from the three dollar relays. Get one you can count on.

I would start with cleaning the battery terminals. Then disconnect the signal wire like stated above.

My tc40 died on me climbing a pile of dirt a few weeks ago. Stone dead, nothing for power. Turns out the battery terminals where just dirty. Parked undercover also. Cleanes the terminals and replaced the rusty original terminal bolts with stainless steel.
