I am looking at a tractor for my son, this little New Holland is about the right size for a teenager and has enough safety features that I feel comfortable with him on it. It runs and drives, but after warmup it starts to blow white smoke out of the road draft tube in a bad way. It smells like diesel exhaust, not coolant. I would take another peek at it to make sure it isn’t a cracked head/block or head gasket. The oil doesn’t smell like fuel, the coolant level was too low to see bubbles if there were any, but it runs good, just smokes BAD. Any thoughts?

I should add that it only has 746 hours on the clock

If the "road draft tube" is the crankcase breather tube and it's blowing noticeable white smoke from there it has an engine problem. Unless you're ready to dig into it soon you probably should find something else for the boy.

I’m pretty good mechanically, but I don’t want to buy this and then be into it more than it’s worth. I should clarify, warm up was about 2 minutes. Plenty of white smoke. Doesn’t smell sweet and doesn’t have the scent of coolant. I’m kinda wondering if the rings are stuck from sitting. It only has 746 hours on the clock and based on how it looks, I’m betting they are accurate. There is no water or coolant in the oil. No evidence of water in the fuel, the sediment bowl looks pretty clean, the machine lives inside.

I'm saying a properly running diesel engine doesn't have white smoke blowing from the crankcase breather tube after running for two minutes. If indeed that's what you see, the machine has a problem that won't be fixed easily or inexpensively. the number of hours on the clock or the shine in the paint don't enter into this. You started this thread asking for thoughts. That's my opinion for it's worth. If the white smoke doesn't scare you, then by all means but the tractor.

Is it possible that an injector is dropping fuel on the piston at all times and not closing all the way? I understand that blow by is in what causes what we see in the crankcase, but why does it smell like raw diesel?
