I posted this over on Antique Tractor but figured I'd see if anyone could chime in here. Hoping for some help solving this issue.
I have a later model MF65 diesel Perkins AD4-203.
It ran great and had good power when I first got it, but with quite a bit of blow-by. The injection pump was leaking, so I sent that and the injectors to Mike at pumpguys. The pump was unrepairable. So I got a new one.
New pump on and rebuilt injectors, it fired right up but smoked (white/grey) terribly and ran rough. I should have dealt with that first but I was also wanting to rebuild the engine because of the blowby and one cylinder low on compression. So I did the whole top end - new pistons, liners, valve job, head gasket, etc.
After that it started right up with great compression, but same bad smoke and running rough. I adjusted the injection pump timing slightly and that reduced the white smoke and smoothed it out some, but not perfect.
I figured I'd give it some hard work and get the rings seated, so I hooked up the 10ft brushhog to it and ran it for a couple hours really hard. Didn't seem to help. Low power, and it POURS black smoke when it's under load. And it still runs rough.
Update: a few people suggested the air cleaner, so I pulled that off to check it. The element is badly deteriorated so I ordered another one and am waiting for that. In the meantime, I hose clamped a double layer t-shirt over the intake hose and took it out for a spin just to see how much the air cleaner was really affecting it. The black smoke/power may be marginally improved but not much.
The black smoke/low power is only part of the problem, and it's only when under a good load. I still have the issue that it's running rough. And some gray/white smoke.
Even though I just had injectors rebuilt and pump replaced, I guess there could still be a problem somewhere in that system?
Thoughts or ideas?
