1967 Case CK 580. Worth owning?

Been looking for a hoe for a while. General hobby farm use. Found an old Case 580 nearby on CL.

Rebuilt motor, runs good, some cylinders leak. Hoe needs work. Affordable.

Capable of doing the work, but not super thrilled about buying a project.

Don’t have any experience with 580’s or much vintage equipment beyond Farmall Cub and John Deere B.

I know 580s are kind of THE standard but hesitant about parts availability

Currently own a 20hp JD2210, and 30hp JD4400

Questions:
1. Will this still be “easy” to source parts?
2. Will they pull a drawbar similar to a JD 2020/3020? Or is that a poor use?
3. At around $5k asking, what is a good price?

The 52 horsepower diesel engine in this tractor was recently rebuilt. The tractor is an easy cold start and the power definitely shows through when running the tractor.

She's a great workhorse with a lot of value I just don’t use it enough to justify keeping it.

- Needs new cylinder seals for backhoe attachment. Attachment is mechanically sound but the seals leak. I’ve already purchased the seal kits needed but they need to be replaced. I have a contact that can replace these.

- Tilt front end loader cylinder seals leak a little

I would pass simply on the 2 wheel drive aspect. Seals are relatively easy to source, a hydraulic pump may not be.

1. Call the local Case dealer and ask about parts
2. No drawbar, to drop the hoe and use for that, may not be worth the effort
3. 5K is probably in current reasonable range

That is a really old tractor. Parts are available to some degree, but this is not the "580C" which is what made a name for Case and was the backhoe. This is the earliest 580. The tractor looks clean and tight. I assume the transmission is a manual shuttle with a clutch? That would be okay for your use. If it has a power shuttle, then I would steer clear. I agree with @D&D, worth about $5000.

They were removeable using a 4 point mounting system. There was a 3 point "MOD kit" that mounted on the same points so you could use grader boxes, etc. with your Construction King machines

I have a 1970 something 580CK. When I bought it about 20 years ago I paid 5 grand and it was a good price at that time. The machine was pretty beat up and had lots of weld repairs. But everything worked and the gasoline engine ran well. I used the thing up until last year when it blew the seals on the power steering pump in the steering column. They will be replaced this summer along with some other repairs it needs. I used the piss out of the machine and the 2 wheel drive was mostly not a hindrance. If you buy the machine you are looking at you will need to get the needed outrigger cylinder before you use the hoe. Don't even try to operate it without it. Mine has a clutch and a shuttle shift for going from forward to reverse and then back again. The clutch is just for shifting gears, the shuttle shift needs no pedal pressing. This feature is super if you are shifting lots of dirt or rocks. Speeds things up a whole lot.

I have a 430 case backhoe. Older than what your looking at. used to be able to get seals from case dealer. now they say they can't help me. Boom cylinder started leaking and I looked around and found the seals at Yesterdays tractor. No problem. Sometimes you just have to pass the dealer and look elsewhere, Might even be cheaper.

Looks like a great machine for the price. Original paint in that condition tells me it's been stored indoors and has low hours, and it was taken care of. You could buy a tractor 30 years newer that is a much bigger project and much more difficult to work on. These old models were really simple to work on. All old tractors are projects. No way around that. Every tractor that is over 20 years old is going to need hydraulic seals and hoses replaced from time to time. These are simple tasks anyone with a few tools and basic mechanic skills can perform. All the hydraulic seals and parts are available from multiple vendors. There is nothing proprietary about hydraulic seals. All of the hydraulic seal distributors have them. They are just generic seals. Engine parts and rebuild kits are easily sourced and are relatively inexpensive.

My biggest concern would be, if it has a shuttle shift, does it work properly? Eventually these seals will fail which requires splitting the tractor. Many consider that a project to large, though in reality it's pretty easy on these older models.

Either you live in an area where tractor prices are very low or there is something untold in the seller's description about the condition. Where I live, this is would be the best old tractor deal you will come across.

To your drawbar question: "Will they pull a drawbar similar to a JD 2020/3020?" I would say similar to the 2020 if you are on flat ground and can raise the loader all the way up to move the weight toward the rear wheels. I often unpin the bucket when I don't want that weight on the front of the tractor for rear ground engaging tasks. So, I would say similar to a 2020 but a 3020 has 40% more hp so... All of this is of course considering the backhoe is detached.

Thanks for the advice. Good to know drawbar would be tricky.

I called the seller and was #2 in line. He said #1 guy was pretty excited and running over a deposit, so probably will need to keep looking.

I was concerned about the age primarily because some of the old equipment has miserable sightlines and uncomfortable ergonomics.

I believe backhoe was removed for repair.
